Pregnant and mother-in-law getting chemo

Hi everyone,

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and we've known for three weeks that my mother-in-law has cancer. No one knows about our pregnancy yet, it's our first baby, and she started chemo yesterday. Should I visit her, or could this have serious consequences?

First of all, congratulations on your pregnancy, and at the same time, strength for this difficult time with your mother-in-law!
As far as I know, chemo or having cancer can't really harm you or your unborn baby. Chemo is administered in the body and doesn't work like radiation, unlike radiotherapy.
Just to be safe, ask a midwife, gynecologist, or oncologist.
    Strength!

    Hi Stefke,

You can definitely visit your mother-in-law, just be careful with body fluids like saliva, urine, and sweat. In other words, better not to hug each other, use a different toilet if possible, don't drink from each other's glasses, etc. If there are other treatments or tests being done, you should stay alert. If radiation is involved, you (I think) need to stay away for 24 hours. Discuss this with your oncologist and/or gynecologist. Especially if you're less than 12 weeks pregnant, you need to be extra careful.

Here's a similar situation, which is why I know this so well.

Good luck and don't forget to enjoy your pregnancy!

I understand it's nerve-wracking. Chemo itself isn't radiation, so that's not a direct danger. But it's probably best to ask your treating doctor exactly what's going on. Sometimes other substances are involved. Keeping distance from bodily fluids is often wise. Just give the consultation bureau or your midwife a call for reassurance. Better to double-check.
