And we're going for it!

Hi ladies, here I am again. Since yesterday, my partner and I have decided that, given all the changes happening in our lives, we'll start buying baby stuff from December onwards. Even though I'm not pregnant yet, we don't want to have to rush if things go as planned and want to have the little essentials ready. This is because we're busy with house hunting and planning a wedding for 2016. If we buy the small things now, we'll only need to add the big items later. At first, we thought it would feel weird to buy things without being pregnant, but I've realized I'm not the only one. I have a friend who has already furnished the entire nursery and has everything, including the stroller and literally EVERYTHING.

So my question is: how many of each size should we buy? And are there other people who want children but aren't pregnant yet who have also started buying stuff?

Thanks and love, Ashley

    Hey girl,

I don't want to sound too negative, but I really strongly advise against it. We did it too. Three years later, it hasn't been used yet. Luckily, we will be able to use it in January if everything goes well.

The idea seems very logical. It's better to save separately for your baby. When you're pregnant, you really have plenty of time to buy everything.

If you're pregnant, do you want to know what it will be? Then buying everything in advance just isn't practical. If you don't want to know, four or six packs are more than enough. You'll get through the first week with that.

Personally, I don't get it. A hat or a onesie, okay. But really buying a whole wardrobe like your friend did is just crazy and definitely not normal. But if you feel good about it, go for it!! I would buy size 56.

I understand your point, sweetheart, and I think it's really great that you didn't get to use all those things for so long. I get that it was annoying for you, but that doesn't mean it's the same for everyone. I know a lot of people who actually recommend doing it, because anyway, the costs don't hit that hard. I personally find it nice and convenient too. That's just how I am. And my partner is completely on board with it. So that's nice.

And I don't find it nice that you say it's not normal that my girlfriend already has everything. If she feels comfortable with it and happy because of it, I don't see the problem. The fact that you had to wait so long doesn't mean you should react like that to other people.

    Cheers, Ashley

It might have come across a bit wrong, sorry about that.

I think I was a bit too harsh.

What I mean to say is that it's more common to go shopping when you're pregnant. And regarding your friend, I don't mean that she's not normal. It's just not the usual thing. Maybe that's a better word choice.

However, I do understand you both. But I still advise against it. And not just because it took so long for us, which I wouldn't wish on anyone. If it takes longer or goes wrong, having all those things makes it even harder. Save up, besides all the nice things in your life like the house and wedding, for your future baby. That way, you can go shopping for the rest of the stuff once it's time.

I recommend you buy basic stuff in size 56. That way, you can always dress it up with gender colors if you want to know what it is. Size 50 is often too small or just wearable. And don't buy too much. You'll get more than enough during your maternity week. Plus, shopping after the birth is super fun!

    Sorry again.

Ashley, I also think it's better to buy stuff only when you're HIGHLY pregnant. I was so happy that we finally got pregnant after two years that I started buying baby clothes too. At 12 weeks, it went wrong. Now I regret starting so early. Maybe it's superstition, but I wouldn't do it. Plus, it's not handy if you're moving and have to take all the stuff with you. But I read between the lines that you've already made a decision and are just asking what, how much, and which size you should have. You can find those handy lists online. Just Google it. Good luck with getting pregnant!

    Love,

Plus, if you buy now, you have to go with neutral colors. It's much more fun to shop with a purpose when you know what it's going to be.

I'm so glad we decided to wait on buying stuff. At 9 weeks and 5 days, we found out our baby had passed away. I'm glad I don't have to face baby items right now. Also, one of my motivations was that it could still be twins (which is always possible), and then you'd end up with an expensive stroller when you really need a double one. In a year, you won't be able to sell such a stroller for the price you bought it for. Everyone's own choice, of course.

We do have a savings account specifically for the baby. We deposit €100 every month, and we've been doing this for almost a year, so we'll have a nice starting amount by the time the baby arrives.
