Overdue but negative test

Hi there,

First off, I want to mention that I do plan on having my GP put me straight on this, and I’m not expecting any definitive answers from this forum/the internet in general. But I am really curious to hear about others' experiences.

I’m now a week overdue. I took a test yesterday (ClearBlue) and it was negative. I’ve read that it’s quite possible I tested too early. Also, I’m wondering if it matters that it wasn’t first morning urine (the leaflet says it doesn’t matter, but still... I drink a lot of water during the day).

I’ve also been a bit weird with the pill. After being on it for 10 years, I stopped in early January. To my surprise, I got my period regularly again right away (neatly every 3 weeks). In May, I took the pill for a month again but stopped after that month.

Now I read a lot about coming off the pill, etc., but I find it strange that my body was back on track immediately after 10 years on the pill, and that it wouldn’t be so after just one month...

    Hi!

I always find 'pill withdrawal' to be a pretty broad concept. One person only gets regular after a few months, while another has no issues at all, even though these two might have used the exact same pill. And 9 out of 10 times, an irregular cycle has nothing to do with the pill withdrawal..
Your body can definitely be thrown off by taking that one month of pills, I think. You suddenly get a big hit of hormones, and it takes a bit for your own hormone levels to get back in order.

That your test is negative now could mean 3 things:
    1. You're not pregnant
    2. Your cycle is longer than usual this month. Even with a normally regular cycle, it's not unusual for it to take longer once in a while. So you tested too early.
    3. You still have too little hCG in your urine. The leaflet says urine type doesn't matter, but morning urine is definitely more concentrated than urine later in the day (especially if you drink a lot!)..

So, you can't do anything else but wait a bit longer.. I don't know if you want to get pregnant or stopped the pill for another reason, but I'd recommend buying Kruitvat tests (2 for 5 euro) from now on. Clearblue is quite expensive, and those 2-for-5 tests are very sensitive and reliable

    Good luck xkruimel

    Thanks for your reply, Kruimel.

I’m not really trying actively to get pregnant. I did stop the pill for that reason, but mostly with the mindset: if it happens, it happens. From now on, I’m open to it. I just turned 26, so I’m not really in a hurry.

I just moved in with my boyfriend and yeah, uh, we do have a pretty active sex life. Almost every day. So combined with the fact that I’ve never been overdue before, it made me think right away: could it be? Already this soon?

I guess there’s no choice but to wait a bit longer. But this uncertainty is really draining. And even though I’m not consciously trying to conceive, I was a bit disappointed yesterday...

I’ll definitely pick up those pregnancy test strips anyway!

I’ve had some bleeding and cramps today. It doesn’t look like my usual period blood though – it’s bright red (quite light) and very watery. It’s not a lot either; I only notice it when I go to the toilet, and the panty liner barely picks up anything.

It could just be implantation bleeding, so it doesn’t mean anything yet. I’ll keep an eye on it. I was planning to see my GP anyway if it continues.

    Hi there!

I went to the doctor with those same concerns—overdue by a week and a little bit of bleeding. The GP took a blood sample. The doctor thought it was because my endorphin levels were too high. That evening I got the news that we were pregnant. I was told to lie flat for two weeks because of the bleeding.

In the first phase of pregnancy, all the mucous membranes are a bit weaker, so you can get bleeding from having sex or sneezing. I used to get regular nosebleeds in the beginning. I also had a negative pregnancy test.

Maybe you should get your blood tested too.
