I think it's just old blood, since there's always such a gap in time.
But if you're unsure, I'd just do a test for peace of mind or even contact your GP.

    Well, that's the tricky part—I really don't dare to do it. I'm still super young and we're living at home. I'd be really happy about it, but going through this twice would be quite a blow.

    What I was told after investigating my irregular/ceasing menstruation is that your uterus will at some point 'flush out' mucus from the uterine lining if you haven't had a period for too long... this is to keep the uterus healthy, as the built-up lining needs to come out, even if you haven't ovulated. Normally, this comes out during your period, but without ovulation, you don't have a real period either..

    That's also called brown discharge, it's often old blood, and many women experience this, usually before their period.
