no clear signs

Do other moms have this problem? My little one doesn't give very clear signals. I feed on demand, but that results in me feeding every hour or two, for example. He signals with a shaking head, sucking on his hand, and an open mouth. But he also does that when he's seeking comfort or has colic. He's 4 weeks old now, and I'm still at 12 feeds a day. Who else has this or knows what to do?

    Hi Mariska,

First off, I think it's really impressive that you're so in tune with your baby and that he doesn't seem to need to cry to get fed. Hats off! You could maybe try stretching the intervals a bit, so see what happens if you don't feed him right away. Maybe he's sucking on his hands because he has a need to suck, but isn't really hungry. On the other hand, 12 feeds at four weeks isn't all that unique, mind you. Many breastfed babies feed more often than bottle-fed babies. Breastmilk is much easier to digest. I'd suggest trying to stretch the intervals a bit, but otherwise, just keep doing what you're doing. The number of feeds will naturally decrease, and babies can't get chubby from 'too much' breastmilk (unlike formula). Good luck!
