Ovulation tests or just guessing?

Hi!

I was wondering: when you decided to get pregnant, did you buy ovulation tests or just wing it? I notice there's a lot of talk about ovulation tests. Hopefully, I'll ovulate in June (I just stopped the pill), but I have no idea if I'll get a regular cycle. I'm afraid I won't, because it was very irregular before I started the pill. An ovulation test would be a good option then, but I wonder if "winging it" would also be too hard...

Difficult haha

We went for it on a "guess" and it was successful pretty quickly. (Which is of course not a given.)
We had decided beforehand to do it this way and if it hadn't worked out after half a year, we would have started using ovulation tests, also because it would have felt like a must.
Fortunately, it wasn't necessary for us, otherwise it would have been an absolute blessing!
Wishing you lots of fun with the chores and hopefully you'll have baby news soon

Tried here, but the ovulation tests don't seem to work for me. They only started working after 10 months of stopping. The tests were bright positive while there was no egg visible (I know this from ultrasounds since I was in the MMR program), and when there was an egg, there was no line to be seen.

If I were you, I'd just have sex whenever you feel like it and wait for your first cycle to pass anyway. Ovulation tests are a pricey gimmick; you need some insight first before you start using them.

Stressing and feeling like you 'have to' have sex isn't necessary for you two yet. Enjoy the tension and all for now as long as you can. Wait half a year or so before looking into other options. I know from experience; it saves you a lot of hassle!

Good luck with it and hopefully you'll get pregnant soon

Thanks for the replies! I've decided to just track for 6 cycles first. Then I'll buy the ovulation tests!

    And what is mmm?

Good job, Chelle. Hopefully, you hit the jackpot in the first 6 rounds.

MMM stands for Medical Crazy Wheel. If you're trying to get pregnant with the help of the hospital... I couldn't get pregnant on my own, but now I'm over 9 weeks pregnant thanks to the fantastic help of the gynecologists!

Great that it worked!! May I ask what prevented you from getting pregnant (on your own)?

I have PCOS. It's a hormonal imbalance that means I don't have my own cycle and have way too many immature eggs in my ovaries.

Oh, that's less! Really great that it worked out

I started without doing any tests. I did track my temperature for one cycle to get a sense of how my cycle was running. That was my second cycle after stopping the pill and the first one where we were trying to conceive. By chance, it worked out right away.
I didn’t want to start testing because I was afraid it would turn into some kind of task or chore. But I do realize that I’ve been very fortunate with how things turned out, so I shouldn’t really make any definitive statements about it.

I've also read a lot about temperature taking on this forum. Is that very reliable? I'll stick with guessing for now. I think my partner would go crazy otherwise. He thinks I'm (too) focused on it. Tsjah...

If there's a reason for your irregular cycle, like it was for me, then ovulation tests won't help you. For me, they turned positive a day before bleeding started, but I didn't have a real period. So wait a bit before buying!

I’d personally wait a bit too, it just makes you think about it more and takes away the spontaneity. I only started in the 6th week and didn’t do it every week after that either. Sometimes I just didn’t feel like it. Good luck!
