Evening ovulation tests?

Hi everyone,

I stopped the pill at the end of April because we really want a baby. Last year, I also stopped for half a year to see what it would do to my body; I had a regular cycle right away and got my period every month. Now it's very different! I have irregular cycles, sometimes 42 days, once 64 days, and the last one was 34 days (during the last cycle, I thought I felt my ovulation).

I'd like to start using ovulation tests, but it's naturally very difficult with such irregular cycles. I'll stick to my shortest cycle and start testing on day 11. What makes it tricky is that I work in healthcare, so I was wondering: is it possible to test late in the evening, around 10 or 11 PM? That's when I'm home.

I'm curious to hear your advice!

Best wishes...

I don't have much experience with ovulation tests, but I thought they could work in the evening, while pregnancy tests are better done in the morning.

Love and let me know how it's going with you?

    Thanks for your reply!
Yes, I thought ovulation tests shouldn't be used with morning urine and should be taken at the same times as much as possible.

I'm going to start using the ovulation tests tomorrow evening, and I'm curious when my ovulation will be since my cycles are so irregular. I hope for more regularity now, but we'll see.

    Love...

    Hi Sarah,
I also understood that you can do ovulation tests best in the evening. Except for the CB ones. Those are one of the clearest, and you can actually do them better in the morning. I use those myself.

    Good luck!

    Hi Tamtam,

Thanks for your reply. I'm currently just using the cheaper ovulation tests. I started last night and already had a faint line, but that doesn't really mean anything, right?
Once my cycles become more regular, I might switch to the OPK tests from CB.

Which round are you on now?

I'm not really sure how those with the lines work, I have to say, because I've only used Clearblue. They're expensive, but they're the clearest. But well... if you're irregular, it's trickier, and you'll probably need more tests. I've figured out that my egg releases pretty late, so I'll start testing on day 15 this cycle. This will be my 3rd round with ovulation tests, they're working well. This will be round 8 overall for us.

Yeah, if my ovulation tests stay so unclear, I think I'll just get the CB tests next time.
They're indeed expensive and I do have to use a lot of them so I don't miss my ovulation, since I have no idea when it'll come now. But yeah... I'm willing to put up with that
Oh, you've already got a few more cycles under your belt; I stopped the pill at the end of April and this is now cycle 5 for us.

Thanks for the site I'll take a quick look right away.
Yeah, it's also a good idea to use CB more as confirmation.

Yes, stay positive, they say you should keep in mind that it can take at least a year. I'm just an impatient type... and I really need that now, haha.

    Good luck to you too!

Can you still get pregnant a day after ovulation?

You can just order ovulation tests. Clear Blue is ridiculously expensive. If you go to 'zwanger en kids' you can order tons of tests and often get an extra pregnancy test for free. I paid €13 for 25 tests! They work perfectly. Your peak is clearly visible, the line is darker than the control line. Good luck!

Hi Sarah! Nice that you're on it! You can do those tests anytime. I did mine around lunchtime. I have a busy job too, but I just did it quickly on the toilet. Actually, just like tampons, I kept them in my bag! So easy. And now the lines are light but they're getting darker and darker. Around my expected ovulation day, I did one around lunch and another in the evening so I wouldn't miss it. I'd also recommend noting your discharge every day and possibly your BBT. If you track that in an app, you really get a good idea of your own body!

I work in healthcare too and used ovulation tests in round 1. But I did them for my late shift. And if they really spiked before and after. And for an early shift after my early shift. I could just see my ovulation coming. I'm going to try ovulation tests again this round, even though I feel my ovulation, it still gives me a bit more certainty.

    Hey girls,
I’ve been getting a light pink line on my ovulation test for the past 3 days... it’s not getting darker or lighter... I’m doing this because of my very irregular periods... Did I miss my egg or is it still coming?
  13. Merel #14

I think he still has to come. When did you calculate and do you keep track of other things? Bmm, discharge?
  14. Lieltjuh #15

I'm not keeping track of that yet, just temp and ovulation tests. Wait a few days to see what happens...
  15. Merel #16

It might be handy to keep track of it too, gives you a complete overview. And you can easily keep it in a text message.
  16. Lieltjuh #17

I’m on day 6 now and still getting light positive ovulation tests. I tested with two different ones over the past two days, but same result... That can’t go on forever, right?
  17. Clautjuh #18

I think you really do need to be patient for a bit longer. He could suddenly be dark, and you might have had a late ovulation. It's always tricky when you don't know exactly. Good luck!

I'd advise you to just test every day at the same time. In the morning, your urine might be too concentrated, which could give you a positive test every time. I do test in the morning with the Sensitest, though. Sometimes I get a very faint line, but there's a clearly darkening line around my egg. By doing them for a month and sticking them next to each other, you can see the progression well. The main thing is to see them go up and down. That way, you'll clearly see your peak.

Great tip, Puck! As an addition; I always did them around lunchtime and when I was fertile, also in the evening. And you can also add things like discharge, maybe something about your nipples/breasts? That way you get to know your body super well!
