can it be for a girl?

hey..

my boyfriend Thomas and I already know it's going to be a girl. We're both totally in love with the name Gijsje, but I'm not sure if it's really appropriate for a girl, or if other people like it as much as we do. What do you all think about the name Gijsje for a girl O-)

Thanks in advance and best wishes, Kelly

    Phew,

I actually think it's a nice name, but on the other hand, Gijs is really a boy's name. Gijsje, on the other hand, is clearly for a girl.
I find it has a bit of a rural vibe to it, if you know what I mean.

I'd go for Guusje instead; Gijs really feels more like a boy's name to me.

I personally don't really like diminutive names. I find names like this cute until the kids are about five years old, and after that, they start to seem a bit childish. It might soon just become 'Gijs' when she's a bit older.

It can work, but it does have an old-fashioned origin. That's why I don't think it's very modern. Boys' names were given to girls along with the diminutive 'je' when parents wanted to keep a family name (grandpa/uncle) alive.

I often wonder about a name; what if I were called that (at 26 years old)? Or; how would I feel if a professional relationship introduced itself like that? (think about job applications).
    I also agree with Iza.

I definitely think it's doable! Nice! Yeah, and what others think... whichever name you choose, there will always be comments!

    Hi Gijsje,

Of course it can be for a girl.

I actually think the same as Annemarie. I also look at how nice the name is for an adult, because you're an adult for the longest part of your life. That's the only thing I'd add. But you guys have to give her a name that gives you a good feeling; that's the most important thing.

Good luck with the choice and all the preparations!

Hi! I think Gijsje is a really beautiful and creative name. An acquaintance of ours is called Stijntje, and people often say the name is just as "masculine" as most names. Just go for it, especially if it fits you!

    Hi,
I'm not really into Gijsje myself, find it a bit old-fashioned. Still, it could be nice. I know people who have a Sien and a Neeltje. Old-fashioned names, but actually super cute.
Good luck deciding what you're going to do!

Just because I wouldn't choose it myself doesn't mean it's not a nice name.
If you really want it, just go for it.

Although it does sound very sweet, Gijsje....
Or whether Gijs will be as cute when she's older, girl, just do what you want!

I don't like Gijsje at all for a girl, or even for a boy, actually. But if I had to choose, I'd rather it be for a boy than a girl. If I have to pick, I don't find Gijs appealing either. Sorry, but "Holle Bolle Gijs" always comes to mind for me, but that's just my personal opinion, of course. What do you think, for example, of the names Lizette or Floris?
