same name as your brother's child

Hi,

I'm facing a dilemma. I'm 38 weeks pregnant with our son, and this week my brother also had a son. Guess what? They gave him the exact same name we chose for our boy! When I heard it, I felt like the floor had fallen out from under me.

I thought, well, we'll just pick another name. But it didn't work out that way. You can't just casually change a name; you've been talking to your baby in your belly for 20 weeks using that one special name you wanted for him.

Should I change it to a different one now?

It doesn't feel right to suddenly start calling my belly by a different name. It feels like something serious has happened, forcing us to rename him.

By the way, I only see my brother about 10 times a year!

What would you do?

    Heeee!

Pfff, that's tricky! Someone opened a similar topic last week because their sister had the same name for a girl.

I'd talk to your brother about it... let him know; hey, we already have that name, would you mind if ours has the same name?

If he really makes a big deal out of it, maybe you could tweak the name slightly?

I wouldn't choose to use the same name myself, I think... no matter how hard it is!

    Good luck with it, girl!

oh how sad! and your due date is getting closer too!

did you keep your baby's name secret throughout the whole pregnancy?

my sister-in-law and I were pregnant around the same time, and I told her I'd rather let her know now: if it's a girl, she'll get this name, and if it's a boy, this one. And a friend of mine was pregnant at the same time and told her too, because I really wanted to avoid that...

well, it's really up to you and your partner whether you want to give the same name, so think it over carefully. I understand you're in a tough spot right now.

    greetings

    Hi,

    This is really tough!
If you really want to use this name, I’d definitely talk to your brother about it.
It seems really difficult and especially not fun if they have the same name, but ultimately it’s your baby and your choice! Go with your gut. Best wishes!

Phew, tricky! Indeed, coincidence and make up something else difficult! But I wouldn't like it.

    Thanks for your replies,

Everyone around me says you should do what feels right for you and not listen to others; after all, it's our child and our name.
Even if my brother gets angry, it's our decision and we'll just see once all the little ones are born how we name them. If we both say it's that name, then it's that name.
What if you name him differently and then always regret it later? You can't turn back time!

    Greetings

How is the name you want to give the little one?

It's really unfortunate, I hope you come to a decision yourself...

    Love, sweetheart

Personally I wouldn't do it, but I do think it should be allowed.
I have the exact same name as my cousin (daughter of my father's brother, so we also have the same last name).
My parents, uncle and aunt, my cousin and I have never had any issues with it.

Here's a similar situation. My sister's son has the same name as my partner. The name my partner carries is a family name that he wants to pass on to his son (it's somewhat expected in his family). It's a beautiful name, so I'd be fine with naming my son that. But my sister... I can already foresee some drama.. what do you guys think?

Either go for the variant or just don't care at all.

Well, I get what Anne says. Your sister can't really say anything about it, it's a tradition and YOU think it's okay, so yeah.
