Does an ovulation test measure hCG during pregnancy?

Hi ladies,

I've read that if someone has a persistent positive ovulation test, they're usually pregnant. So an ovulation test also measures HCG levels in your urine. Now I'm wondering how that's possible. As far as I know, your HCG levels only start rising once the fertilized egg has implanted. So how can it be that girls with a persistent positive ovulation test are pregnant? Or is this really exceptional??

Also, I'm wondering who else has experienced this. And whether anyone was pregnant without having a persistent positive ovulation test.

It would be so nice if we didn't have to wait 2 weeks but could just wait a few days unfortunately, reality is different...

I'm curious to hear your responses.

Love, Aafke.

I had it too... I didn't believe it either, and then I was pregnant and tried it, and yes!! I think it's because the hormones are so similar... as far as I know, but you can't measure ovulation with a pregnancy test... so you can use an ovulation test to detect a pregnancy

Thanks for your reply, dcb and suprice! Did you take an ovulation test when you already knew you were pregnant? Or a few days after your ovulation?
I did indeed read that hcg and lh are almost the same.

Dian, take it easy, girl. Check in the morning if you need to, or the next day. It’ll save you stress and money and give you more certainty!

I was curious about your message, Aafke. So I just tested it with an ovulation test while I'm 8 weeks pregnant now. Even though it was evening urine, there were two lines on the ovulation test!

Hi, I find it all a bit weird, I don't know what to think. My last period was on May 21st, I was supposed to get my period on June 18th but nothing yet. I did ovulation tests, they were positive, pregnancy tests were negative. Now I also have a bladder infection. I went to the hospital on Sunday, they did another test there, which was also negative in the evening. Negative. And I felt my ovulation on June 8th.

    Hey AAFKE,
I had 5 positive ovulation tests and 2 negative pregnancy tests, even though I still feel pregnant. But it turned out to be too early to test, so I'll try a pregnancy test again on Friday!

    Good luck!
