How long does it usually take to get pregnant the first time?

My partner and I have been trying to get pregnant for a while now. I stopped taking the pill back in September 2012, but I don’t know how long it stays in your body.
We’ve also tried the ETOS evaluation test and urine sticks on fertile days, but that hasn’t helped either.
Are there people here who have experience with getting pregnant?

No experience with that, here it took two tries the first time. But I hear from many women (especially after long-term pill use) that it’s totally normal to take half a year to a year to get pregnant. I’d wait a bit longer, keep trying, and if you really don’t feel comfortable or have a bad feeling about it, I’d go see your GP. Good luck!

I also stopped the pill in September after using it for 16 years. We were pregnant within 4 months. I didn't buy ovulation test strips in the store (found them quite expensive) but did download a free app (called My Days) on my phone where you enter your menstrual days and it automatically calculates your fertile period. In our case, it definitely helped!
    Wishing you lots of success!

    Hi ladies,

I stopped the pill and got pregnant within a month.
    But every body reacts differently.
The doctors say you should wait a year before trying to conceive.
I hope everyone gets pregnant soon.

Since stopping the pill, trying to get pregnant for 4 months

Okay, I shouldn't worry too much about it. Blessing people in my surroundings might help, maybe. It's every month then, but we'll just have to wait and see. Hopefully, it'll come on its own. It definitely takes longer for me, since I've been on the pill since I was 16 and now I'm 28.

It can definitely take a while! For us, it took 7 months, and I think that's about average.
And indeed, try to keep your thoughts about it to a minimum. It sounds so cliché, but we actually got pregnant in the month we really didn't expect it!

I'm now in my first month without the pill.
I find it a little bit exciting, though

Brabbels also has a super ovulation app that shows you each day what percentage chance you have of getting pregnant. Free to download!

indeed, it's also suspenseful for me every last week of the month.

Oh, I haven't found the Brabbels test yet. How can I find it?

The question you asked is something that most women who want to get pregnant are interested in. It's very different for everyone. I've been trying for 1 year now. We're both young and healthy, but we just can't seem to get pregnant. During the first two weeks of my cycle, I'm full of hope, but the other two weeks, I go crazy from waiting.
Sabje, you can find the test at Kinderwens-Ovulation and Pregnancy Calendar. Or you can also download a free app for your mobile phone.

Thanks! I was indeed thinking it’s a good question, hehe. I’ve removed the app from the market for now and will just check how it works.

I only know that you’re most fertile about 10 days after the first day of your period. But how does the cycle work further on? The weeks after your fertile days are indeed a waiting game. After stopping the pill, I always get my period in the last week of the month. Two months ago it was around the 27th, last month around the 25th, so that’s quite a difference. So from next week, I’ll just wait again. And not thinking about it is pretty hard work as a babysitter (gastouder), hehe, but I already feel like I have less hope. I’ll see when it comes now.

    Hi Sabje,

It doesn't necessarily mean anything if you've been on the pill for a very long time; it really depends on your own body. I actually took the pill for 15 years without a break (well, except for the monthly week off). I stopped on Dec 24th, got my period exactly 28 days later, and had a positive test on Feb 15th. First time lucky! Unfortunately, I had a miscarriage... but it can happen so fast. I think they usually say it takes an average of a year. Hope you get pregnant quickly! I used the Clearblue digital ovulation test because I wanted to know what my body would do after 15 years on the pill. It worked well, though it is pricey.

    Best, AM

    Hi Sabje,
We’ve been trying for a year now too. But I’m 33 and my partner is 42. Maybe that has something to do with it. In April, I have an appointment with the gynecologist to see if everything’s okay. Exciting.
    Love,
    Mel

    Hi Melsed,
Well, I have nothing to complain about after 6 months indeed. I really hope nothing serious is going on. Keep us updated!
Take it easy and try not to worry.
She’s still dreaming away, and I’m not really doing much else. Patience is a beautiful thing.

    Hi everyone!

This is also our first time trying to conceive. We've been at it since January, so it's not been very long. I have an irregular cycle, though, ranging from 31 to 38 days. My last period started on March 7th, but it only lasted 2 days and wasn't very heavy. A week later, I noticed pink mucus/blood on my WCP chart... Could I have had implantation bleeding so soon after my period? We weren't really trying as hard this month as we were in previous months, but I found this quite peculiar. Does anyone have experience with this?

Love! And congratulations to the pregnant moms among us!

    Hi AM,

I totally agree with you that it varies from person to person. I’ve noticed that I had pretty intense mood swings in the first few months, but it’s a bit less now, so I think the side effects of the pill have settled in or something.

I’m still hoping to get my first 28-day cycle this month. I actually had that too when I stopped the pill for a while a few years ago (which had nothing to do with wanting kids). I tested with an ovulation test on Wednesday and got a clear line, so my ovulation was probably Thursday or Friday. That means my due date would be April 4th, so still over a week away. As for symptoms, I haven’t noticed anything yet, so I’m hoping to get them soon ;-)

I did have a CT scan last Friday because of my sinuses, so I hope that didn’t mess things up... But we’ll just wait and see.

Sorry to hear you had a miscarriage. That must have been quite a shock, I imagine. Has your cycle started up again? When is your due date?

    Hi Brabbel,
so glad you feel like your body is picking itself up again after a few months. Okay, so you’re also using ovulation tests—I find them really handy. They help me focus on it just for a bit in the morning and not have to think about it all day long, like “oh what am I feeling now” or “oh what if that’s it.” It gives me more peace of mind knowing what my body is doing.
Yeah, the miscarriage was really sad, but it’s only made my desire for a child stronger, so we’re just going to keep trying for a baby.
I got my first period since the miscarriage today. It feels good that my body is picking itself up again so quickly.
Good luck with the chores this week, and I hope you get a positive test on April 4th!!

@Sanne, I had implantation bleeding a week after my last period when I was pregnant, but it was after a 5-day period, so it’s definitely possible. But from which day do you count then?
    Greetings, AM
