Cloth or disposable diapers?

We're still debating whether to go with disposable diapers (saves a lot of time but is more expensive) or cloth diapers (cheaper and supposedly helps kids become potty-trained sooner). What do you all choose, and who has (good) experience with cloth diapers?

    Hi ladies,

Here’s a mom who works as a nanny, and there are a few kids there who wear disposable diapers...

You’ve all listed the benefits nicely You also get subsidies in certain municipalities (here in Belgium) if you choose to use them.

But do consider the downsides too... From my experience, they’re super inconvenient! If your child has diarrhea, it’s no fun at all! You always need to have a special bag on hand for soiled diapers, and if you don’t have spare plastic pants (that go over the diaper) with you, you’re in trouble if those get soiled too... Also, if your little one pees a lot, clothes can sometimes get wet.

And as for the “cleanliness” aspect—that’s complete nonsense At work, we have 4 kids using these diapers, all between 2 and 2.5 years old. One is just starting potty training, another has been at it for a while and should be potty trained by now... but nope... It has absolutely nothing to do with potty training. A child using regular disposable diapers can become potty trained just as quickly or slowly as any other child.

I don’t want to scare you away from reusable diapers, but do think about your washing machine! (And you can’t just wash one diaper—that would waste too much water, so you have to wait until you have several, because obviously you don’t wash a dirty diaper with your regular laundry due to smells, etc. And believe me, after a while, they don’t smell so fresh anymore and can get quite grubby!)

Many parents are indeed in favor of these diapers, and I respect their choice, but there are also many who chose them and eventually went back to disposables.

    Lots of love,
    Daphne

We have cloth diapers and are very happy with them. Our son is now 11 months old and we still have no regrets. We find them very easy to use. We can also easily compare because when we're on vacation, we bring regular diapers instead of cloth ones. With regular diapers, I'm always shocked by how much waste they create and how much smell ends up in your trash bag (especially in such warm weather).
Washing the cloth diapers is also so easy, and accidents with cloth diapers rarely happen (not as much as with regular Pampers). I recommend you get good advice about cloth diapers (there are so many systems nowadays), which ones best fit your profile, and then you'll see that you'll be very satisfied.
