I'm going to a fertility doctor

Hi everyone,
I just want to get something off my chest. We've been trying for a year now and we've decided to go to the GP, who referred me. We have an appointment on March 1st and I'm really curious. I've already gotten a lot of info. I'm interested in hearing stories from others who have experienced this. I don't talk about it much with others, so I find this forum really nice. Thanks in advance.
Greetings, Angel

No experience, but I wish you all lots of strength and success. I hope we can hear soon on the forum that the pregnancy test is positive!

Hi! I'm pregnant with my first baby, thanks to an ICSI treatment. Lucky enough, it worked the first time. If you have any questions, feel free to ask—I'll try to answer them!

    @Angel,
Good luck, girl. I don’t have any personal experience with it, but I do know this forum, and it’s a super duper nice place with lots of lovely, fun, kind women who respect each other and each other’s opinions.

Feel free to share your thoughts.

Hi Angel, wishing you lots of luck. As someone who's been through it, I can tell you it won't always be easy, though it varies from person to person. After trying on my own for 1.5 years, I went to a fertility specialist. I had various tests (results were always good), then an HSG (X-ray/flushing of the fallopian tubes), and tried on my own for another half year. No result. Then I did 3 IUIs in a row, no result. After that, I went straight to ICSI, and the result is now sleeping in the box. I'd especially recommend listening to your own feelings. Some people take a few months' break between each treatment, while others (like me) prefer to go for it all at once. You're the only one who can decide that, and make sure to communicate that clearly to your doctor.

    Thanks ladies,
    for your response.
@ Maya I'll keep you in mind. I'll first ask everything at the doctor, and if I still don't understand or want to share experiences, I'll get in touch with you. First, let's see if everything is okay or not. Then I'll let you know.

    Angel, good luck!
Myself and my husband tried for 2 years to get pregnant, then sought help, did an HSG, nothing remarkable found, did 6 IUIs, all looked promising, eggs present, sperm good, but no pregnancy. Then first egg pickup, 9 eggs, 4 fertilized with IVF and 5 with ICSI. IVF failed, 1 ICSI transferred and 1 frozen. And now 6 weeks pregnant from the first attempt. It's really something not to be underestimated. Taking hormones, giving injections, feeling misunderstood by most people. You often feel like you're at the end of your rope. Try to talk about it though, because it's really hard alone. Definitely keep your spirits up! It'll all work out!
    Big hug!

    Hi everyone,
Just wanted to let you know how it went. My partner is doing well and so am I. We had an ultrasound and everything looked good. Now I just need to have a uterine scan and get my blood drawn to check if there's any issue with my hormones. I'm already feeling a lot more at ease knowing things will work out. Does anyone have experience with a uterine scan? Is it really painful or is it manageable?

    Best,
    Angelique

    Hi Angelique,

I was so done with it last August. Every month brought the disappointment that I’d also had to go to the GP and get referred. I found it really nerve-wracking. First, there was an intake session about what they were going to do and what they’d be checking. That all went well. Then they did an HSG. Beforehand, I was quite anxious about it. I’d read a lot and thought, “Geez, do I really want to go through all this?” Then I told myself, “Come on, toughen up—bearing a child isn’t painless either, so just get on with it.” I have to be honest: the HSG turned out to be way less bad than I’d feared. Inserting the cup wasn’t pleasant, but not really painful, and the fluid went in much easier than I’d expected. They did have to manually inject the fluid once because the pump (?) wasn’t working… That felt a bit unpleasant for a moment, but it passed quickly. All in all, it was manageable for me. But definitely read up on other people’s experiences too.

After that, we got the results: nothing unusual and no reason why it shouldn’t work, yet they still wanted to help us. We were put on the waiting list for IUI, and I received a letter telling me to contact them when my period would come in February.

You sometimes hear stories about people who get pregnant “spontaneously” at the last minute. And honestly, from my ovulation onwards, I kept thinking, “Surely it won’t be that easy?” But on February 3rd, I held a positive test in my hands. I’m now over 9 weeks along and still can’t believe it. I’ve had an ultrasound, and there really was something in there…

I’m not saying it’s the norm, but thankfully there are exceptions!

Anyway, wishing you lots of success!

    Mamamar,

I hope things don’t go like this for us either, but I’m not counting on it. My period should start again on Saturday, and then I’ll have to get blood drawn and have an ultrasound done. I guess I just have to experience it myself. I’m already feeling it. There are probably other stories out there, but yours doesn’t sound too bad. I did get some painkillers that I need to take beforehand.

Do let me know how it went.

    Love, Angel

My GP also advised me: just let everything wash over you and get everything checked out. You're going through the mill and just go with it.
I found that pretty tough; I thought, yeah, that's easy for you to say, but you're not the one lying there. I told myself that too, though.

I wasn't done yet. Okay, so I talked myself out of it and thought, "Come on, let's see where the ship runs aground." For me, the best way to deal with it, besides humor, is just accepting it. I thought, "I could cry about it not working out, but that won't change anything."

I did get angry when I called to book the HSG appointment. You have to call on the first day of your period, so I called, and the woman who made the appointment said it nicely (and without much empathy) that I must NOT be pregnant under any circumstances. I understand that's how it works, but didn't I just tell her I was calling because I had just started my period? It came across so poorly at that moment—I mean, the first day of your period is always a disappointment that it didn't work out. So I told her quite un-friendlily that THAT was exactly the problem..... It really rubbed me the wrong way! I should also say that they've always been very professional, and that helped me. I notice I secretly also found it nice to put my feelings on paper???? Still wishing you lots of success and hoping you'll have a positive test soon!

    Hi Mamamar,

Yeah, it's nice to write it all down, I can totally understand that. Thanks again, and I'll keep you posted.
    Love, Angelique
