who can help me? amniotic fluid or discharge?

Hope someone can help me. I'm 40 weeks pregnant today and I'm wondering if I've lost my water or if it's just discharge. I suddenly felt something leaking, went to check, and it was clear with white bits and mucus. It wasn't very watery at all, so I think it's probably just discharge, but the white bits make me doubt a little. I always thought amniotic fluid was as thin as urine. Hope someone can help or recognize this. Sorry for the not-so-glamorous story.

Love,

You should actually take a quick sniff. If it smells sweet, it's amniotic fluid. Otherwise, it smells like urine :-)
Before my waters broke, I heard a clear pop in my belly, but it could also be a tear!
    Good luck!!

Thanks for your reply! I think it was amniotic fluid after all; it's still dripping now.

Amniotic fluid is supposed to smell sweet. I had a lot of (watery) discharge towards the end too; it sometimes felt like I was peeing in my pants. But it was just discharge. If you're unsure, the midwife can test with a swab to see if it's amniotic fluid or discharge. Good luck and keep us posted!

blowing on your hand, if amniotic fluid comes out... I had to do this with the second one too at the OB-GYN

Hi everyone! I'm 34 weeks and 5 days pregnant. My baby has already dropped, and I've already started dilating. I've been having some white, mucus-like discharge that feels good when walking and is quite thick... sometimes thicker, sometimes thinner (quite mucus-like and odorless). Any idea what this could be? o.O

Odorless is probably just normal discharge, anon! But if you're already dilating, I'd still give a quick call just to be safe...

My MIL said amniotic fluid smells a bit like Haribo banana candies
Seems far-fetched to me haha, but I think you can definitely smell the difference between urine, discharge, and amniotic fluid..

If it's mucusy, I'd think it's the mucus plug. Amniotic fluid really comes out like water. Discharge isn't mucusy. During pregnancy, you're already more likely to lose mucus. It's not really a big deal if you're losing your mucus plug; your body will make more, and it can be quite large. Since you're already dilating, I'd still call to check in. Just ask if it's serious.

With my first, I thought I was leaking urine when I laughed.
    Didn't do anything about it.
After 2 days, I had to go to the midwife for a check-up, told her, and everything was set in motion except for the hospital where I gave birth—I had to stay for 24 hours for observation because it was indeed amniotic fluid that the little one might have swallowed.

So I guess I should just give the midwife a quick call.

Funny to read this back.. I was the one who started the forum. It was indeed amniotic fluid for me, and we got a healthy boy. Now we're trying for a second little one :-)

    Hi everyone
I'm really still in the very early stages of pregnancy!
5 weeks and a few days

So now I'm lying in bed and suddenly I'm losing sweet-smelling fluid
but at 5 weeks pregnant there's no amniotic fluid yet

Do I have sweet-smelling urine or am I maybe further along than we thought?

    Quick question,
If my water breaks, should I keep waiting or go to the hospital right away?
