No children, just a miscarriage.

Hi everyone,

This is my first time posting on this forum because I’ve been feeling really anxious lately, and I’m hoping to find some comfort in other people’s stories.

My partner and I decided to start trying this summer, and we got pregnant pretty quickly. Unfortunately, I had an early miscarriage at 6 weeks. It’s been two months since then, and every time my period starts, I get this overwhelming feeling that I’ve failed. I know the chance of getting pregnant each month is only about 15%, but I was wondering if anyone else here had a miscarriage as their first pregnancy, and how long it took to get pregnant again. Also, how did you cope with it? Did you do ovulation tests, or just let things happen naturally?

Thanks in advance!
Jipke

Wow, that's intense, sorry to hear about your miscarriage . Unfortunately, it took me 32 months, but it was due to my husband's sperm. On average, it takes about a year. But they do say that you're more fertile after a miscarriage or childbirth

    Hey,
I didn’t have a miscarriage in my first pregnancy, so it’s not exactly the same. But I do have experience with miscarriages, unfortunately. I had miscarriages during my second and fourth pregnancies, while my first and third pregnancies resulted in healthy kids. My second miscarriage was also an early one, at 6 weeks. The first was a missed abortion at 11 weeks. Anyway, after the first one, it took longer for my cycle to recover. But with the second miscarriage, my cycle came back quickly in terms of timing, but I had spotting and stuff in between. This round, round 3, I feel like my body has recovered a bit more. All the hormones and stuff need to recover too; your body has been through a lot. I think it’s really positive that you got pregnant so quickly—it seems like a sign that the sperm are swimming well and that you’re ovulating. It can sometimes take a while, unfortunately, but every time is different. With my first pregnancy, I got pregnant while on the pill. My second pregnancy (miscarriage) happened the first month. My third pregnancy (my son) took until the fourth month. My fourth pregnancy was a bit unexpected but very much wanted. Now I’m actively trying again, but I’m also in round 3, so in a week I’ll know if I got lucky.

Oh, so sad to hear about your miscarriage. I know a lot of girls go through a miscarriage at some point, which can make you feel insecure about getting your period every month. But on average, most girls get pregnant within a year. Some faster, some a bit slower. I have friends where it was very different: one took 1.5 years, the other in the first round. Or one in the first round and the second "only" after 14 months. For me, it always took about half a year, and the last time was shorter because we weren't actively trying, so that doesn't really count. But fingers crossed, it can be over in a blink of an eye every month. I did use ovulation tests, and with those I found out that my cycle was different after my first birth. I always had very regular periods (26-29 days), but it turned out my ovulation happened on day 18, 19, or 20, so it was good I found that out with the tests. Otherwise, I would have given up too soon. You can also chat here every month with the NOD groups, that helps too.

Just logged in, wanted to quickly add that I want to wish you strength. Getting a miscarriage is just f***ing awful, having to wait patiently until it sticks. Physically and psychologically. Take your time and have faith in your body, even if it doesn't feel that way right now. I also meant to say above that my body was thrown off twice after the miscarriage and it seems to take a bit longer, but it did work out (at least the first time). I did read here and there that people were extra fertile and stuff, I put my question marks there. But your body has been through a lot and sometimes needs a little time to get all the hormones in order. That you got pregnant quickly the first time is a good sign, I hope you'll soon experience the joy of having a healthy pregnancy.

Thanks for your replies! It might sound weird, but it's actually quite comforting to hear that this is fairly common. It's something you don't really hear about, as if there's still a taboo surrounding it. I'm trying to let go of it a bit, but I personally find the "just don't think about it and it'll happen naturally" advice impossible. Personally, I find the two-week wait period the hardest. If you have any tips for getting through it more easily, I'd love to hear them Anna, thanks for sharing your story! I know that, as you said, I can indeed feel at ease knowing that medically that part is okay. And yes, chatting on this forum seems like a good start. Thanks for the tip!

A miscarriage isn't fun.. and what the ladies above say. Fortunately, it says nothing about your fertility!

Lots of different stories.. one gets pregnant quickly, another less quickly, treatments etc.. and we all wait those 2 weeks in suspense At least you can put your "egg" there for sure

Those 14 days are indeed long, although it does vary. Sometimes I think about it more than others. Sometimes I try to fill it positively too, eating healthier. Getting more exercise, working on more rest, etc. It doesn't always work out, but at first I saw it as time I had to sit out until you knew if it had worked. Now I try to see it more positively, but it's easy for me to talk about, surely because of my kids. I hope you'll have success soon and can chat nicely in the relevant forums
