Baby blues

Here I am, in the hospital bed with a 5-day-old baby next to me. My daughter has high bilirubin levels, so she needs to spend a lot of time under the lamp (phototherapy), which means we have to stay longer and longer in the hospital.

Meanwhile, I've been feeling the walls closing in for a few days now. I'm not getting any sense of joy, no matter what they say or do—nothing helps. I feel like I'm in a hopeless situation, and I'm slowly going crazy. Literally, I feel trapped.

Because of the poor levels, we don't know when we can go home yet, and not knowing makes me even sadder. I WANT TO GO HOME.

Has anyone experienced these feelings? If so, what can I do? I feel like I'm sinking deeper and deeper, and I can barely see any light at the end of the tunnel anymore.

Hulp inschakelen meid. Je erkent het zelf al, dus ik zou het meteen doen. Zijn jullie wel al thuis geweest of nog helemaal niet sinds de bevalling? Gefeliciteerd met je dochter en sterkte met de situatie

We haven't been home yet. I'm waiting for the new blood test results.

That's really tough, girl. Around this time after giving birth, it's pretty normal to have some tears, but you're saying you don't feel any sense of joy yet... Have you talked to the nurses or anyone about this?

Stef, I've had that feeling twice. I gave birth too early and had to leave my babies in the clinic for a month. I did go to the clinic twice a day, but when you're home alone without the baby, you shed a lot of tears.

Oh, that's so sad. You really have a lot of worries with such a little one. Please make it okay to talk about how you're feeling. I went through it too during my first postpartum week; it was truly awful how I felt, but I didn't want to talk about it because I felt like an ungrateful rotten mother. So that made it even more complicated, because change can only happen once you speak up. And really: it does get better, and you will start to get that happy feeling again. So that light at the end of the tunnel will be there.

    How are you doing now?
