Irregular cycle, when to test?

Hi there,
We’ve been trying to get pregnant for about four months now, but I have a very irregular cycle. My last cycle was 37 days, and now I’m already at 43 days. I took an Action test this morning, but it was negative. Could I have tested too early? I hope you can give me some advice.
