Almost 35 years and 6 months in

Hi ladies,

I'm almost 35 and have been trying to get pregnant with our first baby for half a year now. I've been reading some confusing info about when you can go to the GP. Given my age, do you think it's wise to see the doctor already? Or should I really wait a full year? If I wait another half year, I'll be 35.5 and then they'll have to do tests... which takes forever. I'm curious how you all see this?

Best,
Carolien

    Hey Carolien,
I myself stopped the pill at 35.5 weeks... and got pregnant after 6 months. The process of coming off the pill was quite short after 20 years of taking it... it can definitely take longer.
I don't know if you were on the pill or if you have a regular cycle... if there are actually no signs of anything strange, I'd still dare to wait a bit longer.
On the other hand... just do what feels right for you. If you're unsure, just call your GP. Or call a midwife who also supports you when trying to conceive. My midwife does that too... she can listen to what you've already done and think with you about whether you should start the medical process already.
Good luck in the coming weeks!

Thanks for your message. I was on the pill for years but had a regular cycle right away. I also clearly feel my ovulation every month, so I think that's good. Was/is this your first time too?

@carolientje from age 35, you can go to the GP after half a year for a referral to the gynecologist

I had to try for 8 months and it worked out. I’m 34 years old, the gynecologist also said you’re not a young lady anymore.

    Sorry, wrong account

@gemma at 34 you have to try for a year on your own first

Elvira, isn't that pretty normal? Try on your own for a year first if your age isn't medically concerning yet?

Most couples get pregnant within the first year.

You first need to stop the pill or something like that. That often takes a little while. Get to know your cycle. And every month you have a 20% chance of pregnancy with sex 2-3 times a week. Assuming everything is fine.

Carolientje, I'd call the GP and ask for a referral.

@anoniem yeah, it's totally normal to try on your own for a year first, but it's still a long time, especially if it turns out there's a reason why it's not working out Even if you don't have to stop the pill, you still have to try on your own for a year first

In Belgium you can make an appointment with a gynecologist right away... Anyway... At least... For the 3rd baby we went straight to the gynecologist, but maybe it was because of our medical history that we got help right away.

    Hi

I get that you're feeling a bit rushed at 35 (and I guess everyone with a desire for kids feels this pressure—I know I did, wanting it right away ) But, if you're a bit older (35 isn't that old, but biologically it's just easier to conceive at 25), it's also normal for it to take a little longer! It can already be considered 'normal' if it takes a year (okay, most couples conceive a bit earlier), so I'd give it a full year at 35. There's some tension between the rush because medical tests and help take time, but on the other hand, give your body some time—maybe it'll happen spontaneously all of a sudden!

Good luck, hopefully it'll happen soon!

    Hi everyone,

Just an update, unfortunately still not pregnant. In the meantime, we've been referred to the hospital.

Had blood drawn, and I saw online that my FSH is too high, namely 12 on cycle day 3. I haven't had a conversation with the doctor about this yet; it'll probably take over a month before there's an appointment.

Is an FSH value of 12 really bad? Does anyone have experience with this?

Would it make sense to suggest having my blood drawn again for FSH and ask if they can also include my AMH? Otherwise, everything will just take longer again...

    Best,
    Carolien

Oh, that's really tough for you.
I don't have any experience with this; we've always gotten pregnant naturally.
I'd definitely take the initiative myself. Go ahead and have that conversation, ask your questions! My experience in the hospital is that you get better help if you keep asking your own questions.
Toitoi... hopefully it works out this time.

    Hey ladies!
I’ve also been struggling for a long time with our kids.
I was 29 when I got pregnant for the first time, struggled for 2.5 years.
Now 10 weeks pregnant with our second child and still struggling for 2 years.

When we found out we were going to have our first child, we had an appointment at the hospital a few days later. Luckily, that didn’t happen
Now with our second, we’re consciously letting nature take its course
