When to start testing with an irregular cycle

Hi hi,
I was wondering when the ladies who also have a long cycle start using ovulation tests? My last cycles were 44 and 43 days. Before that, it was 31-28-28-28. The question is whether there was even ovulation in the last two months. I tested almost the entire last month for the first time and couldn't find an egg...
I thought if I assume my shortest cycle for this month is 28 days: then I'll start testing on day 13.
Do other ladies with irregular cycles do it this way too?

Hi hi Sunflower, I’m starting to test for the first time tomorrow, so I’m currently reading up and getting ready to make a good start with the tests.

Hey Deb, nice to hear from you! Good luck with the tests... I've now got 1 month behind me. At some point it builds up in your system. Don't drink anything from 8 am onwards every morning, and then I test around 10 am. Do you already know how you're going to do it?

Hi sunflower, thanks! No, not really yet. I'm quite unsure about whether I'm doing this right or not. I'm getting the tests tomorrow, so we'll see how it goes? I had the Implanon in for 8 years and had it removed on January 6th, but I still haven't gotten my period. I'm really annoyed by that. Maybe I'm expecting too much from myself.

Oh snap, I had that too... And I'm still trying to figure it out. But you've got to start somewhere Hopefully, you'll get your period soon. That would really be a relief. Or maybe you're already pregnant? ????The chances are slim, but it's always possible. It's probably tough for you right now too, figuring out when your ovulation is, I guess..

Hi Sunflower, I finally got my period yesterday, so I've never been this happy before! So now I finally have something to hold onto. I've also installed an app, and it says I'll ovulate in 18 days, so we'll just have to wait and see. I've got the Ovutest too, so let's see how it goes.

Hey Deb, that's so nice! Then being on your period can suddenly be really nice, huh? Haha!
I'm starting to test again on Thursday, day 13. I'm curious if I'll be able to detect ovulation with the sensitive strips.. I'll be testing for quite a while then.. Because if I have a long cycle again, I'll be testing for more than 2 weeks.. But anyway.
I've been having a dull feeling on the left side of my uterus again today. I had it during my period too, but it was worse then. It's tender when I press on it. It can't be ovulation yet. Weird, right? Hopefully it's just a post-pill symptom..

Yeah, pretty weird. I guess it might be my ovulation coming up. That must be the dull ache. I usually feel my ovulation pretty well. But it would be quite early in my cycle then?! I just did an ovulation test and it's pretty dark. So I hope it's coming in the next few days. It would be so nice if it comes this month AND on time..
I started testing with the Sensitest last month for the first time, but I didn't find any ovulation. The lines always stayed light, you know. I had a cycle of 43 days. They say it's possible you sometimes don't ovulate... It was quite intensive though.. so I started testing from day 11 onwards.. And unfortunately no result.
But now I have the tests that are extra sensitive to LH. Hopefully, if there is an ovulation, these will pick it up.
I've been on the pill since I was 17.. and stopped 8 months ago. But it's still very irregular.

Ah oké, it would be nice if you're finally ovulating now. Especially since your cervical mucus is already so dark. I'll root for you. It would be really nice if you could figure out when your ovulation is happening now. You've been off the pill for quite a while, and it's still quite irregular, so that's a long time, I think?

Yeah, it's been going on for a while now. If it stays like this, I'd go to the GP. I'm still hoping for ovulation to happen on time this month. I thought I had a positive test this morning. The lines were the same color. But I think the test line should be darker than the control line. I'll keep testing for now, I guess.
  10. Deb #11

Yeah, indeed. I also hope you get your ovulation soon. I have no idea how it works, I've never worked with these kinds of tests before. I wish you lots of success with the tests and I'll be rooting for you????????

You too, Deb!! It's all so exciting.
  12. Deb #13

    Thank you so much, sunflower.
    Definitely exciting!

Hi sunflower. Just a tip for you and anyone with an irregular cycle. I got pregnant on March 20th. Eight days later, I had the urge to test, so I did an ovulation test and got two lines, then immediately tried to conceive. Now we'll see if it works out the same way this time. I'm wondering if women with irregular cycles should test earlier than what's commonly said online? Like, not waiting until day 14 after the period, since I already had a peak on day 8.
    Greetings, Deb
  14. Deb #15

By the way, this peak lasted 3 days for me, along with thick mucus, and it was very stringy.

Hey Deb, nice to hear from you again! That's great that you found it!! That's pretty quick on day 8!! Maybe you have a shorter cycle this time, or your LH phase is longer than the average 15 days (the phase between ovulation and menstruation). I think that's possible too....

By the way, I actually got pregnant!! I had a positive test on day 19 of my cycle. I had actually stopped testing because I'd gotten two equal lines before. So I thought that was it. Until I suddenly got stomach pain again a week later. So I tested again just to be sure. This time the test line was really darker than the control line. So that's when I finally popped my egg. But yeah, like you said, I also only got that stretchy mucus then. So that's really a good sign. I'm rooting for you. Let me know, okay?

@deb in a normal 28-day cycle, they recommend starting on day 11. A positive result on day 8 is quite early. Are the lines really that dark? The test line doesn't have to be significantly darker
  17. Deb #18

Hi Elvira, I have a cycle of 27 to 30 days. I also thought it was weird; after my period I had a lot of stabbing pain in my lower belly (I've been seeing the doctor for a while now, they did all the tests that could possibly be done, but nothing came up, even the doctor found it strange). I then tested again on days 8, 9, and 10, and on day 8 both lines were dark. On day 9 it was already a bit less, and on day 10 I no longer had a dark line. So it must have been a peak. I've been testing for a while now as I should, and I only got one faint line without any content, which is why I would have done it. Best regards, Deb

    Thanks so much, Deb!
That does sound like it was indeed your ovulation.
Elvira, could it be harmful if your ovulation is so early? Or does it not matter?
I’ve read before that some women had unprotected sex during their period because they thought they couldn’t get pregnant anyway. But then ended up pregnant because sperm can survive up to 5 days, and their ovulation happened so early!
  19. Elvira #20

@deb No idea if it's harmful, but are the lines really equally dark?
