Forum Baby Names

Sam = girl's name, Sam = boy's name, or Sam = unisex

We'd really like to name our baby Sam. Do you think this is a girl's name, a boy's name, or can it work for both? We're having a boy. Do you think the name would also suit our daughter? Her name is Teddy (we often call her Ted; her full name is Theodora), after her great-grandfather Theodoor. Sam, however, is a name we're choosing purely because we think it sounds nice, with no naming tradition behind it.

    I think it's a unisex name, but I like it more for a girl.
    But it can definitely work for a boy too.
    It fits well with Teddy anyway, nice!

    I think it's unisex too, nice for a boy, and also nice for a girl. For a boy, I feel it comes from Samuel, which I also think is a beautiful name. For a girl, I feel it comes from Samantha, which I don't think is a beautiful name. So I like it better for a boy
    Anyway, it's nice with Teddy/Ted too!

    Totally agree with Lou on all counts! Sam fits Teddy perfectly. It's unisex, but I think it's slightly nicer for a boy. The only reason I wouldn't choose it myself is that it's so popular right now... Do you mind if he's one of two or more Sams in his class? That would put me off. But if you don't mind, then go for it!
