Desperate, can someone help me?

Hey,

Just to give you a quick update.
I gave birth to a daughter in August. Everything went well, she slept well at night, had few cramps, cried little, the only thing she had was some trouble drinking due to thrush. We had long problems with this because the medication didn't work and it only went away when she was about 9 weeks old.

We went to an osteopath when she was about 6 weeks old because of her preferred position, and this guy did all kinds of tests and suddenly started talking about cow's milk intolerance. Our daughter would have this and we had to switch to Nutrilon Hypoallergenic.
Well, then the drama began, even after the first bottle it went wrong. Crying screaming and she wouldn't drink. Still held out for 2 days because I thought she needs to get used to it. Then on advice of the CB back to the old food (Omneo). It seemed to be going a bit better but nothing was less true because after a few days she kept crying all day and during drinking too. GP said she probably has hidden reflux. Got medication for this and indeed she didn't cry during the day, but the bottles remained a problem. One bottle went in so the other she had to scream and cry and wouldn't drink anymore. This is about 10 weeks ago that we got the medication for reflux, but actually since we switched to that other food the misery began.

Now drinking is getting worse day by day.. Very bad.. I'm desperate

The pediatrician says she might have cow's milk allergy and we have to switch to Pepti
But I'm terrified that it will only get worse..

It could be 2 things.
1..the hidden reflux or 2 cow's milk allergy.

Does anyone have advice for me or has anyone experienced this because I really don't know anymore

It could be both. Both of my kids had a cow's milk allergy and silent reflux. After medication and special formula (since even Pepto didn't agree with her), everything turned out fine. Don't give up and keep pushing. We eventually had our first one admitted because he cried so much; with the second, we knew what it was and got things moving much faster.

Oh gosh Debbie, what a heavy thing you've both been through. It's exhausting and breaks your heart because you don't know what to do. And sometimes I really pull my hair out and just cry together out of despair.

So the pep talk isn't really a solution either Then I almost think about just sticking with this formula, but maybe it'll work for my daughter.. I'll keep going, hopefully it gets better soon

So basically it was going well. Until an osteopath said you should switch to a different formula because of KMA?? Then you feel so upset!
Anyway, unfortunately no advice, but I do notice that moms sometimes get so many different pieces of advice. Spicy stuff, huh!

Yeah, it basically comes down to that, sweetheart. Really stupid of me in hindsight, but unfortunately there's nothing I can do about it now.

Every food switch can cause gas pains. Especially if it's a sudden change to a different formula. Their tummies need to get used to it first, no matter what the food is.

It's not surprising that she's resisting the bottle because she's linked the bottle with severe gas pains and possibly reflux too.

    What does your gut say?
    What does your GP say?

No matter which food switch you make, she'll likely still get gas pains, so choose wisely! And then stick with it for a while.

For gas pains around 3 months, I used Infacol. I did feel like it helped. Luckily, it was mostly over after about 3 months.

    Hi Betty,

Thanks for your message. She actually hasn't had cramps for quite a while now. It's really just painful during feeding, which makes her get so upset and cry everything together. As soon as the bottle is out of her mouth, it stops immediately.

I suspect it's really the reflux, which is so painful when swallowing that she refuses to drink.

And indeed, switching to a different formula will take some getting used to, which I'm dreading, because then she'll have pain after drinking too.. It's all very difficult, but today was one of the worst days, and then I wonder if it can get worse and how I can best help her.

The pediatrician really wants us to switch to Pepti.. Difficult.

Oh, it's so hard to see your baby in pain..
My experience with doctors is that you need to be very clear about what you see and think, without taking it personally towards them, but still clear about what you expect from them. Your gut feeling as a mom can never be wrong, so if you think it's reflux, I would ask about medication that might reduce the reflux, maybe even before switching back to formula. Even if it's just to rule it out.
Don't doubt yourself, you're doing amazing, you just need some good medical support for now.

Oh, don't you just have thrush? Mine has it now too and simply refuses the bottle. Luckily, I'm breastfeeding and can skip the bottle altogether. Check your baby's mouth, lips, cheeks, palate, and tongue carefully!
