A name like Sybel

AnoniemGuest ·
My husband and I are both totally in love with the name Sybel for a girl. But there's a neighbor girl named Sybel, and we don't feel great about 'copying' that. We just can't seem to decide on another name, and this one keeps sticking!

Names that have been considered and didn't make it:
Elodie, Alizée, Pippa, Pomme, Belle, Lieve, Quinn.

We'd prefer a name with 1 or 2 syllables, and not ending in -ie or -ou (since we already have those ). For our style, I'm thinking cheerful and mischievous.

Do you have any ideas?

    Hi dear anonymous,

I think if you like that name, you should go for it. If you or your neighbors eventually move, you'll definitely regret not having made the choice back then. Neighbors aren't permanent, and they're not family or friends, so I think it's totally fine. There are often one or two Lisas or Toms in a street... if we all have to look that much, you can't choose any name. And you're definitely not naming your child after an ape! A girl in our neighborhood was named like that a few months after our daughter was born. I thought it was beautiful. So go for Sybel!!

I get that it feels tricky because a neighbor girl has the same name, but honestly, I kind of agree with Orchidea that neighbors are further away from you than family and best friends (I wouldn't do it if it were them). But now I think it's okay.

The first name that comes to mind: Yentl! And a lovely name too. Other options: Isabel, Annabel, Anabel, Louelle, Jaelle, Lilith, Hazel (can be pronounced as Heezel or Haazel), Rekel, Amber, Malin, Marèl, Amelle, Marin, Robin, Robyn, Evelyn.

    I completely agree with Orchidea!
Go for the name Sybel! I understand your hesitation, but since it's not family, there's a good chance you won't run into each other after moving.
You could drop by your neighbors' place and let them know about your choice beforehand. I'd feel incredibly honored as a neighbor )
