My best friend has a son, Mats. His best friend has a son, Mathias. Our preference has been Mathiz for years. Go for it or not?

I wouldn't choose it myself, but I do think it works. You might want to discuss it a bit.
Where does the spelling Mathiz come from? (just curious) Isn't Mathis(se) more logical?

We thought Mathis looked more like... I wouldn't do it either, but my partner thinks we should just choose what we find beautiful... We've been trying to get pregnant for 5 years, and we always had this name in mind. Our friends' kids are 1 and 2.5 years old.

    Just do it!!

Definitely with your story included, just do it!

Sorry, but honestly I don't think it matters how long you've been trying to get pregnant (super congratulations by the way, it's really special that it worked out for you after all that waiting!).
The fact remains that both your best friend and your husband's best friend have a baby with almost identical names. If the friendships weren't so close to you, I'd see it differently. But anyway... it's obviously your own choice. It would just be a shame if this caused tension between the friendships, so if you decide to go ahead with it, I think it's worth discussing.
Good luck making the tough decision!

If you really have this name in mind for the years to come and it’s truly your favorite name, I’d honestly talk it over with your friends. Maybe they won’t mind at all. Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem with it!
If you decide to go with this name, by the way, I’d also choose the spelling that looks best to you. Whether it’s a z or an s doesn’t matter then.
    Good luck! :-)

Mats and Mathiz are really different names to me, Mathias seems to look a lot like it. But anyway, I personally wouldn't find it a problem. Maybe discuss it beforehand? That way you're sure you won't get any funny looks.

We also had to wait a while for our second child, and whenever someone in my circle was pregnant, I was so afraid they'd give 'our' name. Luckily it didn't happen, but I understand how attached you can be to a name!

Just go for it. I don't have a problem with it at all. Mats and Mathiz, you'll hear the difference anyway, so there can't be any confusion. With Mathias and Mathiz, the stress falls differently. Or is it Mathías?
I'd really just go for it.
We wanted to name him Chiel. We were having trouble getting pregnant. The neighbors, with whom we got along really well, had a son named Michiel. It really got to me.
When we finally got pregnant, we chose a different name for our son. I'm happy with his name, it suits him and fits him well, but I still feel a bit sad that there's no little Chieltje running around.

I think it also depends a bit on your friend, I feel. I'd just go ahead and do it if it doesn't bother her. For example, I wouldn't mind if a friend chose a name that sounds similar to my baby's. On the other hand, I have my best friend, who already has two kids, who is extremely sensitive about this. She's made it clear that I'm not allowed to name my kids anything that resembles hers. And she takes it pretty far. She really sees similarities that I would never ever see haha. Some of her other friends have dared to do it, but she's no longer friends with them because of this. Seriously, I think it's over the top, but she's my best friend, so I'll take it into account

Go for it!! It's your choice, and you've already had that name in mind for years. You'll spell it differently anyway, but still! Always considering others and sacrificing your own wishes, I always find that so strange in our society. And otherwise, you might end up regretting it. Good luck.

I would talk to them about it. It really does sound like their baby's name, and personally, I wouldn't be very happy if my partner chose a name that sounds like my child's name. But that's just my opinion.
