Crying baby

Mili
Dear parents,

Are there any other people with a crying baby? Or people who had one?
And by that I mean a long-term crying baby (so not one that settles after 3 or 4 months) and a baby who is truly NOT sootheable (otherwise, in my opinion, it's not a crying baby).

I have a 9-month-old son who is still a crying baby..

My question: how old were your kids when they stopped being crying babies?
I know it varies for everyone, but I just need some encouragement that it will really end ..

Thanks in advance for your replies.
Love, an exhausted mama.

    Oh dear, that sounds awful. I had crying babies too. Three of them. The fourth one could also cry quite a bit, but not as severely. Luckily, it got better from around 4 months onwards.

    I assume you've already had quite a few tests and sought help?

    I know stories of long-lasting crying babies where things improved once they could walk and better express what they wanted.

    Sending you lots of strength. I hope things improve soon.

    Thanks for your reply!

    Wow, 3 crying babies, phew.. I don't even want to think about it (though luckily it's always temporary). Really tough

    We were referred to the pediatrician by the CB (the GP wouldn't do it, saying 'you just have to get through it, it'll pass on its own'.
    Unfortunately, the pediatrician couldn't find anything either, and their final conclusion was also 'crying baby' and 'you just have to get through it, it'll pass on its own'.

    We've tried everything else already (swaddling, rest and routine, osteopath, etc., etc.) but nothing seems to work.

    Is he going to daycare?

    Have you already done the feeding changes, right?

    How does he sleep? Does he make eye contact? Does he respond to your voices? Is he laughing or is it really just crying?

    It was quite intense. Luckily not as long as with you. With the oldest it was when I switched to bottle feeding. The second one spent a week in the hospital to reset. It really worked well. With the third we let it be. She has trouble with emotions. My husband is a bit more blunt; when she was with him it went well. Now she's still not cuddly, only on her own terms. Number 4 just faded into the background with the others.

    He goes to daycare one day a week. It's a complete drama there too, and they can't do much about it either.

    His formula has definitely been switched a few times, indeed. Luckily, he can still laugh in between. Sometimes he has days where he cries for max an hour, but that's more often the exception than the rule, you know.
    He responds well to our voices outside of a crying/screaming fit. But when he's in one of those fits, you can't get him out of it, and you just hope it won't last long.
    He sleeps pretty well in general, luckily (that keeps us going).

    It's impressive that you still went for 4 kids despite these tough periods!

    At our place, it was really close to stopping at 4 months.

    If they don't even know at daycare, they should be very experienced with babies, right?

    Could it be frustration from discomfort? Tummy pain? Fear of peeing or pooping? You haven't found a pattern yet? A certain sound, smell, taste, or something? Did you go on vacation for a week?

    It's nice that he sleeps well. That's really necessary for you.

    Do grandpa and grandma play a role? Does he ever go to their place for daycare? Sleepovers?

    Oh, that’s so tough that your little one is having such tantrums. Our daughter had them for a long time too, I think up to 10-11 months, she cried a lot. I don’t know if she was exactly a crybaby, but as she started gaining more independence, especially when she began walking, it gradually got better. Now she still has occasional tantrums, but not as severe. We really have a different child now. I think she was very frustrated because she couldn’t do what she wanted. I could see she wasn’t really happy. She was also very alert as a younger baby and wanted to be involved in everything and see everything (which is still true now). I don’t know if your son has this too. Unfortunately, I don’t have any tips, but I hope things get better soon for you and your little boy. Good luck anyway!

    Cow's milk allergy ruled out? And I don't mean a pediatrician saying it can't be, but whether you've actually tried it with, for example, Puramino.

    @anoniem
    Indeed.. at the daycare they know plenty of kids, but they themselves don't understand what's going on. He can really flip from laughing into a screaming fit that lasts for hours. Completely inconsolable.. and then suddenly he's out of it again and everything is fine (for no reason).

    We kept track of everything for a few days but there's no particular pattern. We even have weeks where it goes perfectly. And then suddenly it starts again. We don't change anything so it doesn't make logical sense.

    He's like that on vacation and at grandma/grandpa's too. He definitely recognizes us, but he shows absolutely no difference when he's with us or with someone else. He won't be consoled by anyone.

    Meanwhile, we're getting better at accepting it to some extent, because that brings some peace of mind. I was just hoping to hear some positive stories here .

    @kaja
    I always say: once he can... it'll get better!
    But so far, unfortunately, not yet. He can't crawl or walk yet, and I still have hope that it might get better then. That he'll have less frustration..
    It's nice that you got a completely different child!

    @Anne
    Not officially ruled out because it's fine for a week in between sometimes. He also reacts fine to yogurt.
    We did hesitate at one point, but then we also had the problem that he was going through a liter of formula per day (even with 100% forte formula). We corrected that first and then it suddenly got better for 2 weeks. Hence why a cow's milk allergy doesn't seem logical to us either.

    Hang on to those days and sometimes weeks when things are going well. Hours of screaming. What a nightmare.

    If you think it really isn't due to anything. Medically speaking, would it help to put him in a different room if he screams so much? Less stimulation and calm? Maybe he's just overly sensitive to stimuli?

    It's very remarkable that he sometimes doesn't do it for a week. You write that he wanted a lot of food for a while and after reducing it, things got better. Could it be reflux? That could explain why it suddenly comes up, lasts for hours, and then suddenly stops. The inconsolable crying and the fact that he sometimes has no trouble with it for a week.

    We'll definitely hold on to that!

    Medically, there's nothing wrong. His esophagus was fine, and we even tried an acid reducer before attempting anything else. Unfortunately, that didn't bring any change either.

    On the other hand, Wik offers a lot of calm and routine, and he doesn't go out much.
    The screaming usually starts as soon as he wakes up, unfortunately. How cozy!
    And yet, sometimes he also wakes up babbling.
    Really nothing to make sense of.

    Special. You or your husband haven't done this?

    My ideas are running out. I hope he just stops suddenly. Lots of strength. Hugs

    Our first child was a crybaby. As soon as she woke up, she’d start screaming. Terrible period. The older she got, the better it got. But until 1.5 years, she cried extremely much. Day and night. Because until then, she slept max 3 hours at a time. We had lots of tests but nothing was wrong. Suddenly at 1.5 years, she started sleeping longer stretches. 6-8 hours. And the crying during the day also improved. After 2 years, she slept nicely 12 hours at night and cried less 'for no reason'. She's almost 4 now and still a cryer though. We often have to tell her to use her words instead of crying like that. Now we've had a baby for 1 month... This one cries even less than his 4-year-old sister... what a relief. Hang in there!
