What do you think of the name Joran?

What do you think of Joran for a boy? Fun, tough, sweet, unique...? We think it's a lovely name, but we were startled by how rarely it's given, and that's made us doubt. Is there a negative connotation with this name that we're overlooking? Or do parents maybe prefer Joren over Joran because it sounds more Flemish or something? What do you all think? A little message would be so sweet!

Maybe it has something to do with Joran van der Sloot? Serial killer, among other things suspected of the murder/disappearance of Natalee Holloway? I wouldn't choose that name so quickly here in the Netherlands anyway.

Great name, shame about the association with Joran van der Sloot. Is Juran an option? Pronounced Joeran.

Got a call in between I think Joren is nicer, and if that's more common in your family, I'd go for that.

Joran is really beautiful. I think it's a soft and unique name. If you like this one, the following might also be interesting: Joeri, Jelmer, Jace, Floran, Jolan, Jari. Good luck, you'll surely pick a nice name!

I think it's indeed due to the association with Joran van der Sloot.
Maybe Jaron? I think that's a nice variation of it myself.

As a Belgian, I don't have that association. Joran is nice! Also Jolan, Nolan, etc.

Exactly, I indeed immediately think of Joran van der Sloot..

Thanks everyone for the replies! I can understand the link with Joran vd Sloot, but I don't think it's made in Flanders (almost) at all? Sofie, are you Belgian or Dutch?
  9. Sofie #10

I'm from the Netherlands, so that link is probably more common there than in Belgium. Although almost everyone knows the name Joran van der Sloot because it was such a big story in the news in many countries.

I immediately think of Van der Sloot.

You could ask Dez this question on a Belgian website. Dutch people seem to associate it with a murderer. Belgians probably have much less of that association, I guess.

    Orlinapaard,

I'm from Belgium, and I think Joran is a really nice name!
I've never heard of a Joran Van Der Sloot, actually.
Choose a name that feels right for you both!

As a Dutch person, I also immediately think of Joran van der Sloot.

Joy, I did that, but for some reason, Belgian forums aren't used or are barely active. Or I just haven't found the right site yet. But it's nice that I've already gotten a few responses here. It helps me a lot! Thanks!

I wouldn't go for that so quickly. I keep associating it with Joran van der Sloot. Too bad, because I actually like the name itself!

    Hi

My boyfriend's name is Joram. This could maybe be an option too? :-) We're also from Flanders.
I think the name means 'elevated'. I find it quite nice because you really don't hear it often.

Here's another Dutch one that unfortunately immediately makes you think of Van der Sloot...

At the same time, I read that you're from Belgium. If in Flanders apparently no one bats an eye because no one makes that connection, and you just find it the most beautiful name, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
