Help! Postpartum care.

We’re expecting our second child and have some specific wishes regarding postpartum care. I’ve been very mindful about nutrition and would like minimal help since we already have a toddler running around, and I still clearly remember how things work with a baby. Online, I’m mostly being scared with all the things you’re not supposed to ask a postpartum caregiver. I read a lot of negative stories.

I’ve already contacted Isis and a self-employed caregiver in my area (a small village in northern Groningen). With Isis, I didn’t get a good feeling, and the self-employed caregiver was already fully booked. My midwife gave me a few suggestions, but I’m completely overwhelmed.

With my first son, I had neighborhood care, and the woman I got just didn’t suit me at all. I found her bossy, she insisted on cooking, which I had no interest in, and she had an unpleasant personality. So I don’t want to go that route again.

Now, I’m still breastfeeding my toddler, and I’ve noticed some strange reactions to that. I plan to tandem feed once the little one arrives. I also want to give birth at home, and we live naturally and eat vegetarian. I’m looking for someone who is open-minded (I’m married to a woman; this will be our second child, and I carried both of them) and who won’t judge our family setup or my plan to feed two kids at once.

I’d love to hear your experiences with good postpartum caregivers or any tips you might have for me. My due date is in the summer, and many people are already fully booked. It’s making me a bit nervous.

Check out kraamzorg 1 op 1; on their website you can request care or search for someone who works as a freelancer. You can then match with a maternity care assistant if it clicks. I arranged mine a while ago and already met her. The summer period is also tricky, as many people are on holiday. Good luck finding the right match; it's really nice when it clicks.

Wow, your life sounds so beautiful!

I have good experiences with Isis. I lived in Drenthe. My sister did too, and she lives in Groningen.

I wouldn't worry too much in advance. It's not mandatory to take maternity care. You can discuss this with your midwife.

If you do want maternity care, a larger organization might be a good idea. If the caregiver doesn't fit, you can send them away. That doesn't work with a self-employed person.

I can't seem to post anything. I've been trying since yesterday.
