Lena (H.L.F.) Koster or Lena (H.L.F.) de Vos

Our first baby is going to be named LENA, full name Helena Loïse Fee. We're debating the last name. We want to choose the surname that looks best with the first name, so Lena, but also with Helena, since mail will probably later be addressed to H. Surname.
Well, long story short. Which surname do you think looks the nicest? Koster or De Vos.

Thanks! Love, Joeri and Gwen.

I'd go with De Vos. I find Koster sounds a bit too strict when paired with Lena, whereas Lena de Vos just sounds sweet. But it really depends on the association you're aiming for.

Lena de Vos could, in my opinion, easily be the name of an animal from a children's book.
    So I'd go for Koster.

I'd just go with the father's last name. What is it nowadays that people want to change that?

I think it's nice that you're thinking about it. Here, the kids also have my last name because it's easier to spell and pronounce. Yes, we're married, and no, I don't think you should just take the man's last name. Women and men are equal. Then men shouldn't dominate everything like in the past. As you can see, we've also carefully weighed our choice. Koster is a bit stricter, but I still chose that one. Easy to pronounce. The Vos too, but that's a bit more popular (at least in Belgium), which means there's a higher chance of people having the exact same name. Plus, I'd rather avoid associations with animals/objects if possible.

I'd also just go with the father's name. Maybe a bit old-fashioned, but I still think that's normal. It's already hard enough to pick a name, and then you have to think about the last name too... Plus, brothers and sisters get the same last name, so you can adjust it to the first name now, but maybe a future child would have been better off with the other last name. I wouldn't make such a big deal out of it.

I wouldn't make this choice based on the first name. Any subsequent child would have the same last name anyway.

But I wouldn't necessarily go with the father's name either. The mother's name works just fine for me, honestly. I find it a bit old-fashioned to assume it has to be the father's name.

What tipped the scales for us was which of us two wanted to pass on their name more. Maybe one of you feels this is more important than the other?

Anyway, I don't have a preference for either combination; both sound lovely!

I'm also too traditional for this haha, I'd just pick the father's surname whether it's Koster or De Vos.. I find it so complicated sometimes with all the options you have nowadays like double surnames, unmarried, married, mother's surname, father's surname etc. I used to find it complicated as a kid when a mother had a different surname than the rest (kids and dad). I used to think that people were divorced. Anyway, both are fine surnames and not weird so I'd go traditional

Surname doesn't matter much. I just wanted to tell you I'd swap the first names. I can't help it, but I keep reading HALF. And if you're "half," that doesn't mean much good here...

I agree with Puck and Anne. That's exactly what they're saying, and I think so too.
