How do you decide on the last name?

The title says it all; how do you decide on your baby's last name? Dad's name, or the one you think sounds the nicest, or the one that fits best... We're still mulling it over...

We automatically gave the dad's name. Didn't really even think about doing it differently.
But acquaintances, for example, gave her surname, which doesn't occur very often, so that 'family line' would continue because he has a family name that's quite common. That could also be a consideration.
