Scared of postpartum depression

Anoniem
I had a postpartum depression right after my first C-section, even though her pregnancy went well. Now I'm really scared of getting it again and feel anxious too. I just want to enjoy this. After my delivery, I had hyperventilation and panic attacks. It's much better now, and it's been 5 years, but with this next pregnancy, I'm still afraid of getting the same thing again.

Good that you're already making it clear that you're afraid of this. I'm a PPD expert and you can find more about it on my site. Www.Djoke.nl You shouldn't have to deal with this alone. Greetings, Djoke

Mention to your midwife/gynecologist that you struggled with it after your previous birth and that you're afraid it might happen again this time. Maybe they can offer you some help. It sounds absolutely terrible to develop postpartum depression because you miss out on so much beautiful stuff! I hope you're spared from it this time.

    Strength to you with this.

    Love, Sandra

Hi Sandra, thanks for your message. I hope so too, but I'm feeling a bit more positive now. Still, I have some underlying anxieties and hope they stay in the background. Love, Karina

Definitely reach out quickly and get (psychological) support in place beforehand so you can address this proactively. Strength!

    Hi Karina,
I have a friend who also had a very severe PND (she literally attacked people who gave her baby too much attention because she was terrified that her daughter would attach to someone else instead of her). There was really no one who tried to understand her (and she lives in the Netherlands while I'm in Spain).

The biggest problem seems to me to be the lack of understanding from others ("How can she not be happy and joyful with such a cute baby...".
That doesn't make things any better.

Make sure there's someone who understands you, supports you, and can help you out if it happens again.

I also read in a pregnancy guide that due to a C-section or epidural anesthesia, you produce little or no endorphins, prolactin, and oxytocin (called the love and cuddle hormone), which means there's less euphoria and joy after giving birth.
Combined with the placenta (a whole block of hormones!!) that you lose all at once, it's understandable that this change can lead to depression.

Feel free to write your worries off! I hope you're feeling better this time.
    Love, Olivia X

Yeah, I've been feeling good so far. I did have a C-section, which was a bit of a shock, but I'm trying to look on the bright side. Thanks for your messages! xxx
