When should I start using ovulation tests?

Hi everyone, it's me again.

Those who know my story a bit might remember that I stopped the pill in January. I never really kept track of my periods in the past, so I’ve never known how long my average cycle used to be...

Between early January and late June (this year), I didn’t get my period, so no period for 6 months. The first time I bled again was on June 28.
I bled again from July 23 to July 25. If I count this correctly, that gives me a cycle of 25 days. My question now is: should I take this cycle length as the 'standard' (since I have no idea how long my cycles used to be) when it comes to 'trying'? When do you think I can expect my ovulation? When would you start using ovulation tests (I have absolutely no experience with them)? I’d love your advice!

Thanks in advance!

    Hi Jolien.

Unfortunately, there's no clear pattern to follow yet. I'd suggest not assuming anything at this point and not starting ovulation tests just yet. If I were you, I'd download an app on my phone to track your cycle and symptoms. As for intercourse, do it when you feel like it and notice fertile mucus—that's when you're in your fertile window.

Keep the pressure as low as possible and only start testing after a few normal cycles. That way, you'll know better when in your cycle to begin. If it doesn't work out after a year and your cycles are fairly regular, tracking temperatures alongside for 2 or 3 cycles could be interesting to share with your GP. At that point, I'd also suggest taking a break from all this.
