Hi moms,
Here’s an exhausted mom, hopefully you have some tips. Our son is turning 4 weeks old tomorrow and during the day he’s a content, calm little guy, occasionally with some tummy troubles but nothing significant.
The fussing starts in the evening. Around 10 PM I finish the last breastfeeding session, and then I want to go to bed, but that’s when he starts getting very restless. If I feed him again, he seems content for a bit, but then soon after he wants to feed again. He’s also playing more with my nipple instead of actually drinking, so he really just wants to be close to me. He doesn’t take a pacifier. Swaddling isn’t an option for this kid either; he just gets even more restless. He makes a lot of grunting noises all night long, but you can’t hear him when he’s lying next to me. We had already planned to let him sleep in his own crib, but now we’ve decided to keep him in our bed in a nest instead, otherwise we’d just keep going back and forth. I’m even considering switching to bottle feeding, maybe that way he won’t cling to me so much...but I’d rather keep breastfeeding for now if possible!!

Does this sound familiar? Any tips? Pff it’s exhausting and I’m not becoming a happier person because of it.

Love,

This isn't caused by the BV. Do what works! So in your bed, in the nest. Bottle feeding doesn't solve the problem. Try to get him to fall asleep while breastfeeding. He's only 4 weeks old.

Hey girl. First of all, congratulations.
Is he just like this or has he been like this for a while? My son was like this in spurts. Then he slept between my husband and me. And he also wanted breastfeeding all the time. That lasts a few days. Otherwise maybe colic or is he cold?

Phoe, best luck if you can already give her last feed at 10 am at 4 weeks. (Or do you count the other feeds as the first ones of the next day?)
I'd just nap during the day, because those periods of drinking or being restless at night will come up so often. And for now, it'll probably still only be for a few weeks that he wants or needs to drink at night.

Indeed, as anonymous says, co-sleeping during the day is important.

It's indeed exhausting... (most of the first year). He can't really do himself any harm sleeping in his own bed, though, not even from 3 days old. If it gives you more rest. My baby also had a lot of restless nights. Sometimes I took him in bed, sometimes let him lie in his own bed. It depended on how his crying sounded. He also didn't want a pacifier. Good, because he doesn't really need one now to sleep, etc.

But maybe he has a sucking need. Maybe it helps to let him suck on your finger for a bit and he'll calm down from that.

Thanks for thinking along with me! For now, night feeds are indeed part of the routine, but the burping and restlessness afterwards keep me awake. Last night I found out that he often needs to burp about half an hour after feeding, which causes discomfort and cramps. I’m keeping him in our bed for now and taking more time for feeding and burping. And yes, I’m counting the next feed from 12 o’clock, otherwise it’d be too little!

    Have a nice day everyone!
