Unvaccinated kids around baby?

Hi, I could use some advice. I'm giving birth very soon (within a week). The kids on my husband's side (cousins) have never been vaccinated for anything. But they all want to come visit once the baby is born (they're coming from France). Now that I hear measles are breaking out everywhere, I don't feel very comfortable with them coming. Just to explain a bit more, last year I lost my baby at 6 months due to a childhood disease that isn't vaccine-preventable. I really don't want to go through that again. Maybe I'm more scared than I should be because of that, but still. People say a baby can't catch anything because they're protected by the mother for at least 6 months. But my daughter got chickenpox at 3 months from her brother and sister. So she wasn't protected for 6 months. I'm really worried about this, is it justified, am I overreacting, what would you do? Best wishes

I'd honestly tell my man how I feel. My little one's health comes first. Especially with such a fragile little baby. Just speak up, okay.

Yeah, I talked to him about it this morning, and he doesn't think it's a good idea either. We just haven't really discussed whether to let them come over or not (he had to go to work, after all). I'm leaning towards no, but I do understand that he'll have a hard time telling his siblings about it. Would you let them come over, the kids? I don't want my husband to get into another argument with them, but I definitely don't want my child to end up seriously ill (I know the chance is very small, but it was last year too).

No, personally I don't. I'd say it's not going to happen. Everyone does what they think is best for their kids. What's not good for my little one unfortunately won't be happening.

How about agreeing that they can only come over after your own child has had their first vaccinations? That way, the baby is a bit older and slightly less vulnerable. I think the parents would understand, given what you’ve been through. I wouldn’t like it either if it were my child. People with colds weren’t allowed in my house either, regardless of how far they had traveled.

Or maybe let the kids watch from a distance but not come in. And keep the little one in the bedroom, for example. That’s also an option.

Tough dilemma. Honestly, I wouldn't want to either. And maybe only after vaccinations, but I don't know at what age the measles shot is given? You hear a lot about it and it's a risk, so I'd discuss it calmly. Especially with unvaccinated children from abroad... It's super nice that they want to come, of course, but with the new trend of people not vaccinating their kids, I've also decided that the new baby won't go to daycare until at least six months old, but only stay with parents and grandparents. My daughter is luckily fully vaccinated for most things It's just difficult family issues.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your replies and tips. Right now I'm in the hospital to give birth. My husband just got a call from his sister because a distant cousin of theirs (1 month old) just passed away from whooping cough. Infected by someone who wasn't vaccinated. Her kids are also unvaccinated, so we've decided not to let them come. Sister is angry now. But well, my child comes first. And with everything we've been through last year, I'm really not taking the risk.
    Lots of love!

Wishing you lots of success with the birth!

I wouldn't let the kids come either, indeed. I can't even think about putting my child in danger like that.

Congratulations, girl, that's really tough. You really need to think about your child. Let her be angry. She'll cool off and realize the consequences on her own. Enjoy your little one.

Good luck with the birth. Don't let it get to you that your sister is angry right now. She's just been blunt and threw a plate at her head if she doesn't connect her own unvaccinated kids with what they might potentially transmit and what happened to the baby of that cousin. If something like this just happened in the family and you don't understand why a new mom wouldn't want visitors, it hasn't sunk in yet. Hopefully, it will. In any case, enjoy the little one.
