Are there any ladies here whose prolactin levels are too high?

    Hi Lady,

My prolactin was also way too high. I started taking Dostinex since Christmas and it’s helping a lot. I’ve got a cycle again. I’ve already had one period and I’m now in my second round.

I didn’t really have any other symptoms from the high prolactin levels; it just completely messed up my cycle.

    How about you?

    Best,

    Hey Anne79.
    So glad you replied!
Well, the weird thing with me is.. I have a cycle and I always ovulate. Only my ovulation was much later in the cycle, which made my cycle very long. A cycle of 41 days was nothing.

Then we went to the GYN at the hospital. They took a blood test and did an internal ultrasound, and it turned out I had symptoms of PCOS. So I got Clomid.. I've used it for 2 rounds now. Nice ovulation, eggs grew well, and 2 cycles of 35 days.
Before I started Clomid, my prolactin level was 527. A bit high but not worrying, said the GYN.. now I'm 2 rounds into Clomid and they took blood again.. now my level was over 800.
I have to stop Clomid immediately and can only see the internist on March 25th.
I just got my period nicely today.. a 35-day cycle. Luteal phase of 15 days..
But the GYN says that Prolactin disrupts my cycle.. but if you have a nice ovulation and a nice 35-day cycle, then I don't see the problem there.

Do you have side effects from the medication? Did you also have to see the internist? How did this go for you? And how long did it all take?

    Hey Lady,
That’s quite a story. I don’t really know why you’d need medication if you still have a cycle. My prolactin level was 6.5. Sometimes I had no cycle at all, sometimes there were 3 or 6 months between them. I did ovulate, but only very rarely (I always noticed that myself). Because of the elevated prolactin, my other hormone levels are off too. Maybe you have that too, and that’s why they want to put you on medication?
My story goes back quite a while. In my previous relationship, we really wanted children but it just didn’t work out. We went to the hospital and found out that my prolactin was too high and my ex was less fertile. I started taking Dostinex to get a normal cycle, which happened fairly quickly. I then got pregnant spontaneously, but unfortunately it ended in a miscarriage at 7 weeks. Very sad, but I knew I could get pregnant. Unfortunately, that relationship fell apart.
Now, in my current relationship, we also want children. I’m 39 now, so time is ticking. We wanted to let it happen naturally at first because I often feel when I’m ovulating. Last July, I got pregnant again (without medication), but unfortunately, this was also a miscarriage. After that, my cycle didn’t return, so we contacted our GP and were referred straight to the hospital. Since I knew where my problem lay, they immediately checked my prolactin, and indeed, it was much too high again. An internal ultrasound also showed signs of PCOS, but that can also be linked to elevated prolactin. My partner’s sperm count is fine, thankfully. The gynecologist also wants me to see an internist to find out the cause. I’m still waiting for an appointment. Given my age, the gynecologist wanted to start medication right away. I got the lowest dose, which is 2 tablets a week. After 5 weeks, I got my period, which made me very happy. So now it’s round two; I should get my period next weekend (which, of course, I don’t hope for ). I’m on the waiting bench now. I ovulated last weekend, so we’re really hoping hard right now.
Fortunately, I have no side effects from Dostinex at all. I’ve taken Parlodel in the past, but that made me feel very sick and dizzy.
I hope everything gets back to normal for you quickly too, so you can also get a fair chance to get pregnant. It’s always nice to meet a fellow traveler!
    Love, Anne

That’s quite a story with you too..
Do I understand correctly that the OB-GYN gave you these medications? And that you now have to see an Internist as well?

The OB-GYN didn’t do that for me.. I didn’t have to go back to her until the internist gives the green light again.. so I assume I’ll get medication from the Internist. I hope there won’t be any more tests or anything like that.. it’s already been going on for so long, and all those tests take even more time.. we’ve been trying for 4 years already.. a year ago we had a miscarriage.. and we have a beautiful daughter who is 7 years old. I’m almost 28 years old.

Actually, before I go to the Internist, I’d like to have a blood test for Prolactin.. just like the GP suspects, I think it’s due to the Clomid as well.. the OB-GYN said I can’t use those medications this month either.. so I want to see what the level is if I don’t use them this month.. because the level wasn’t that high before I started with Clomid.

Unfortunately, I got my period yesterday..

    Hi Lady,
So sad your period is back again. It would be so nice if it stayed away for the right reasons. You've been at it for a while now, haven't you? Did it take just as long for your daughter?

I did get the medication from the gynecologist. He briefly consulted with the internist about it. Given my age, he wanted to start with medication right away to make use of every egg that comes along.

    Love, X

    Anne79.
No, I was pregnant with our daughter within another half year.

That is handy, having a gyn like that... mine didn't do that unfortunately. But hoping it will be quick, March 25th. I don't like that uncertainty at all.

I hope for you that it will be quick to get pregnant!
