Hard contractions as a sign of labor?

Hi everyone,
This is for the mamas who have given birth before.
What were some signs that your labor had started for you?
I'm currently 40w3d pregnant and since last night I've been having regular hard contractions every 10 minutes, and sometimes they're actually painful.
I'm curious if they'll progress into real labor!

I had pretty strong contractions around 37 weeks that often came about every 5 minutes. I even called the midwife to come over, but those contractions didn't really lead to anything further.
In the end, I gave birth at 39+4 weeks.
