What's going on?

Hi everyone,

I have a “problem”. Hopefully someone here can give me some advice. I’m a 25-year-old woman and I want to stop taking the pill after my current pack because my partner (who just turned 30) and I are trying to conceive. Lately, though, something weird has been going on and I don’t know what to make of it...

Even though I work in a pharmacy, I’m terrible at being consistent with my medication and I forget to take my pill all the time. (Not great, I know). I’m currently on a pack where I still have 4 pills left to take before my break week. But now these weird symptoms are showing up... For the past two weeks, I’ve been bleeding after every time we’ve had sex. Sometimes it’s a little, other times more. It’s reddish with brown discharge, but today, for example, it felt like I was getting my period (just for a very short while). This morning after sex, I had really heavy bleeding (red, not brown, like a tap was wide open, A LOT). Right now, the bleeding has almost stopped, or at least decreased significantly. I normally NEVER bleed after sex. Also, for the past few days, my nipples (not my breasts, just the nipples) have been much more sensitive than usual. Another strange thing is that since last weekend I’ve been having sharp cramps in my lower abdomen. I thought it might be a stomach bug, but I don’t have diarrhea or a fever.

So yeah, I’m on the pill, I forget it sometimes, and I took a pregnancy test on Monday which was negative, but is there still a chance I could be pregnant? Or does anyone have another logical explanation for these symptoms? Should I finish my current pack or should I just stop now and let the withdrawal bleed come?

Stop, let your withdrawal bleed come and then see how your cycle is, maybe test again next week!
And definitely get a smear test done, get tested for everything the GP offers!
Bleeding during intercourse often (not always) comes from unstable cells..... so get this checked out, since you're not yet in the screening program it doesn't mean it can't happen to you!!
I never had extra bleeding, not even after intercourse, but I really was in the pre-stage of cancer... and that at 33, at 30 there was nothing unstable in the screening!!
Can only say, with such symptoms, get checked and quickly!

You're right, Quenna, that smear test is essential. As long as you're not in the age group for the population screening, you really need to make sure you get it done yourself. Bleeding after sex isn't normal, and you want to rule out any serious issues. Don't wait too long to make an appointment with your GP.
