When do you start counting the menstrual cycle?

Hi everyone!
I'm trying to get pregnant with my first baby. I've been at it for 6 months now, stopped the pill in February.
Two days before my actual period, I usually have some light brown discharge. Do you count that as a real period already?
Thanks!

What I always understood is that you count from the moment you have bright red bleeding.
Do you also use ovulation test strips? You could try using a round of these and see when your ovulation happens, then you'll know from which moment it's best to start counting.
