Last minute a different name?

Hi ladies,

Stress has set in
I'm almost due and we'd already had the name for our upcoming baby ready for a while. The boy's name is Louk (Louk Valentijn).
We had the name Lilou in mind for a girl. But now, this week my best friend gave birth and you guessed it; her daughter is named Lilou (Lilou Valerie). And now we don't know what to do. A last-minute new name? Or just give Lilou as the name anyway?
New options are welcome, so we can consider all options better. Our son is named Tom.
Thank you!

Oooh, that sucks! I'd definitely go for something else.

    Here are some ideas:
Maxime, Nina, Linée, Lily, Sterre, Oona, Pippa, Belle, Maëlys, Linne, Flore, Olivia, Bodil, Loïs, Camille, Yaël, Rhodé, Isabel, Mia, Celeste, Loa, Robine, Fréderique, Vita, Ella, Flo, Philine, Florine

(I personally think Louk already sounds too much like Lilou. Maybe spell it Loek?)

    Hi,
I don’t think you should let the name of your own child depend on something else. After all, it’s for life, and no matter how much you like that friend now, things can always change, but your child will always be your child!
Just choose the name you both find beautiful and don’t let others influence you.

Can your partner live with it if the name is the same? Does he/she worry about it? If not, that would be my advice. He/she looks at it more independently.
And you could always talk to your girlfriend. If she's really your best friend, you can have a really honest conversation about this.
And then weigh together what the problem actually is. Are they going to be in the same class? Will they have the same babysitter? Or do they see each other occasionally during visits and birthdays? I just had a namesake in my class and I didn't find that very nice. Teachers making it Vera1 and Vera2 and so on. But if that's not the case, I see few objections. It's just how it feels for you.
It's annoying that it's happening and that you feel terrible about it. Hopefully, you can discuss it well and find a solution. Good luck!

I wouldn't change my name at the last minute. Maybe confide in that friend and say it was your name too... I think she won't be too surprised then!

    Love

Thanks for the replies. The same name is indeed a bit awkward. We live in the same town, so it’s possible they’ll end up in the same class. We really like the Lou sound. Maybe we’ll tweak the name a bit, but not too much. So Milou, Cilou, or Philou. Hmm... We haven’t decided yet.

@rose thanks for your new suggestions. Louk and Lilou won’t be our combo, though, since our big brother is named Tom. But thanks!

I wouldn't choose the same name as my best friend (or others) in most cases. But now that I've had a name for a long time and I know our kids won't be born close together, I'll keep it no matter what she does.

But I've seen it happen with friends before, when Sem was really popular. Then one added a letter, making it a much nicer name now.

I think Louk is really beautiful. Lilou not so much, and it doesn't look as good with Tom, so I'd change it. Especially when it's so close after your friend's. But you have to stand by your choice, of course. I wouldn't like it if my partner chose the same name either.

I get that Louk and Lilou aren't your combo, but since you already have a Lilou around, I wouldn't choose Louk myself. I think they're too similar to Lilou.
I wouldn't go with another girl's name with 'lou' in it for the same reason either.

And that's exactly why I find the whole "we're keeping the name secret" thing so annoying, haha. Whenever I was pregnant at the same time as someone else, I always told them our baby's name. What they did with that info (whether they due earlier or later) was up to them; our name was already set.

I'd just tell your friend. You can't claim a name, and you should pick what you think looks nice.

    Good luck!

I wouldn't choose that for my best friend!
Especially not because of the same village!

    Maybe just Lou?
Or Jalou! I think that's really beautiful.
I also like Milou, it sounds nice with Tom too.

Here are some more names with the ou:
Anouk, Badou, Elou, Félou, Filou, Ilou, Janou, Louisa, Marlou, Marilou, Nilou, Nouk, Sanou, Valou
  10. Nelleke #11

    Oh, that's crap...
Yeah, I wouldn't go for the same name.
But maybe make it Milou or Philou... or Louise?
  11. Vera #12

    Milou... such a beautiful name!!
  12. LJ23 Guest #13

Wow, I think the name option Anouk gave is really beautiful: Félou. Never heard of it before, but it has that "lou" sound you like.

    Hi ladies,
Just a quick update. My partner doesn't mind too much if our kids have the same names, but I don't really like the idea. The name Lilou is now completely linked in my mind to my friend's daughter's name, so we've decided to skip Lilou. We'll keep the spelling Louk though, since we think it looks nicer than Loek.

We both think Félou is a beautiful option, thanks for that! We're not sure yet if we'll go with it. In the meantime, we've come up with some other names. The list now includes: Félou - Sabine - Lucy - Juul. All quite different... So yeah, we're still thinking it over.

    Hi ladies,
Last Thursday, November 1st, our beautiful, sweet little boy LOUK (Louk Valentijn) was born at 39 weeks, big brother to Tom.
Thanks for all the help and advice, even though it turned out not to be necessary after all, haha oops!
    Love, Anne
