what can I expect during childbirth

Hi everyone!

I'm studying for my MBO diploma as a nursing assistant, and we're currently covering the postpartum period. I was really curious about how childbirth goes for a woman. I could look it up online, but I'm more interested in real-life stories. How does it go, are there complications, and what does it feel like when the baby is born?

Thanks in advance.

Best, Jolene

    Hey girl,
My water broke at half past seven, and by nine I was at the hospital. My little one hadn't fully dropped yet, so we had to wait until that happened. I reached full dilation at two, started pushing at three, and my little baby was born at five. I had labor induction and an epidural.
Thankfully everything went well. They just kept a close eye on him because he had pooped in the amniotic fluid.

It feels so good to have him out. I got to hold him right away, and then my husband too.

During the birth of my daughter, I was already five days overdue, so they had to induce labor at the hospital. First, I got medication to kickstart the contractions, and then they broke my water with a kind of long needle. After about five hours, my daughter was born. What I felt most at that moment was relief that she was a perfect little miracle. I didn’t have any complications, but I did have an epidural during the birth.

    Hi Jolene,

I was 40 weeks and 5 days when I had my membranes stripped. I got some cramps right away, but nothing too unpleasant. At midnight, the midwife came by because I was having hardening contractions every 3 minutes. She told me I was already 4 cm dilated and, since I wanted to give birth in the hospital, I could start heading there. At 2:30 AM, my waters broke. Then I got a surge of contractions. Almost every minute, one after another without a break. I could only cope with the contractions while standing, but I felt like I was going to faint, so I went to lie down with remifentanil. Luckily, the contractions then progressed well. Before that, I had been stuck at 6 cm. Because the IV was set too high, I got too much fluid too quickly, so they drained my bladder with a catheter. At 9 AM, I was allowed to push. Because at one point my son's heartbeat couldn't be monitored anymore, an episiotomy was performed, and at 9:20 AM, he was born. Then I had stitches. That took almost 2 hours because the midwife kept having to leave for an emergency.

If you have any more questions, feel free to send them.

    Kind regards
