Can you do this?

Hi everyone,

I'm a 36-year-old man and I've just received some pretty heavy news. I met a woman who had cervical cancer two years ago. She was told by several doctors that she definitely couldn't get pregnant naturally. I've known her for a year now and we've had regular sex. I saw that she was taking the pill... I guess to have extra assurance that she wouldn't get pregnant. Over the past year, she was in and out of the hospital, and sometimes I had the feeling that she was exaggerating a bit. I don't know what medications she took over the past year... but I know it was heavy medication. Two months ago, after a test, she was told that malignant cells had been found again, and they were even talking about possibly removing her uterus. I'm going through this with her, but I have to say I don't exactly know what she actually went through... but it's not good. The cells in her uterus were burned off. She had to stop the pill but got a contraceptive injection along with medication (which I don't know) that is specifically designed to make pregnancy impossible. After the procedure, E. coli was found, so more heavy antibiotics went in. You've guessed it,... she's pregnant and next week they're doing another ultrasound because they strongly suspect it's twins.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this because it just can't be that you get pregnant while using a contraceptive injection in combination with medication that is supposed to make pregnancy impossible, and that while doctors say you can't get pregnant at all?

The only thing I can help you with is that I know the morning-after pill always takes a bit to kick in the first time, and you need to take it again if it's been more than 12 weeks since you had unprotected sex, as there's a chance of pregnancy.

I don't know much about the rest, but I wish you and your wife lots of strength and lots of luck with the pregnancy!

    Hey,

I don't know if it's the same with the copper coil, but with the regular pill, if you're taking antibiotics, the effectiveness of the pill becomes less reliable.

    Good luck!

I got pregnant twice while on the pill, so the pill isn't always safe.

Maybe the emergency contraceptive pill didn't work properly, then it wouldn't be effective either. But what a heavy story, best wishes and strength to you.

Most antibiotics don't make the pill less effective. There are only a few that do, and they're rarely prescribed. The only way antibiotics can make the pill less effective is if you get stomach or intestinal issues, like diarrhea, which reduces absorption. That's not the case with the injection.

That's a really tough situation for both of you. How it could have happened... well... apparently it can happen! The real question is what you both want, and whether she can safely carry this pregnancy to term without putting her own health at risk?

I'd wait to hear what the doctors say and go to those appointments with you. That way you can ask your questions directly. Good luck!
