breech turn at 35 weeks

Hi hi, I had a question. Last weekend, at 35 weeks, I had severe abdominal pain. A real stomach flu feeling, like someone was grating from the inside. Quite unpleasant feeling I'm getting a position ultrasound next week, and if the little one has indeed turned (which still has a small chance), then I'll get an external cephalic version (ECV) at the hospital.
Who has experience with this and can I refuse this attempt? I only hear negative stories. It might not work and the baby's heartbeat could drop....

During my son's pregnancy, I had an external cephalic version (ECV) at the hospital. The attempt failed, and a few days later I had an appointment with the OB-GYN (due to a planned C-section). She told me that the ECV shouldn't have been performed, given my son's position. The midwife had pushed him with his feet against the placenta during the ECV, taking too big a risk (due to the risk of placental abruption). Fortunately, everything turned out okay, but I wouldn't want to have another ECV so easily next time.

I'm not sure if you're allowed to refuse, but it seems like you should be.

I'd recommend getting well informed by the OB-GYN about the risks, and also asking whether you can refuse. Breech birth isn't ideal either, and neither is a C-section.

I had an external cephalic version during my second pregnancy, also around that time!
I went to my midwife/OB, but I really had to go to someone else who specialized in this!
An ultrasound was done first, and during the entire turning attempt, they kept checking with the ultrasound machine!
Once it was successful, I also had to stay on the CTG for half an hour or even longer to monitor the baby's heartbeat after the turn...that was all fine!
It wasn't exactly a pleasant feeling and I did have a bit of a sore tummy afterwards...but it worked and I was able to give birth naturally because of it!
If my OB had suggested this, I would have immediately said oh no...send me to a specialist for this...but I know that now...for the first time, you don't know much...
In my case, it was well organized and I even got booklets (pamphlets) to read on how & what...

    Good luck!

Here’s another experienced mom. Last week I had an external cephalic version (ECV) at 35+6 weeks, and unfortunately it didn’t work. I found it quite scary, but if I ever needed to do it again (with a future baby, of course...), I’d definitely do it again. My placenta is anterior, and I also have very little amniotic fluid, which could both be reasons to avoid the procedure. So I asked quite clearly about this when we discussed the version at the hospital. The gynecologist explained that only specially trained doctors perform this, and that in this hospital (in the middle of the country), nothing had ever gone wrong with a version. The placenta wasn’t an issue at all—it’s on the left side of my belly, and the baby is more on the right. Amniotic fluid wasn’t a problem either; there was enough to try. Before the procedure, I had to lie on the CTG monitor for almost an hour to track the baby’s heartbeat. Because there was one small change visible, they kept me on the monitor longer. After that, we did an ultrasound to check the placenta, baby’s position, and amniotic fluid. I really got the impression that the team knew what they were doing and wasn’t taking unnecessary risks. The gynecologist also made it clear that he wouldn’t proceed if he had any doubts. The version itself wasn’t pleasant, but certainly not unbearable. It did hurt quite a bit, but as soon as they stopped, all the pain was gone immediately. I didn’t have any afterpain or Braxton Hicks contractions either. By the way, after the version I was on the CTG for another 40 minutes, everything was fine with the baby, and then I spent the rest of the day relaxing.

I'm going to experience it tomorrow, then the ultrasound! I do feel some rumbling around my pelvis, but what it is... sometimes I have something hard on the right side of my belly, and then on the left. No pain though, so I'm really curious.

No turning around!! It was a descent contraction and the little one is nicely positioned with the head down!! Phew!!!
