Hi,

We think the name Aoife is really beautiful. But what do you all think? Pronunciation is like "ee"

In my opinion, it's way too complicated. With that name, your child will always have to put in extra effort so that others can pronounce it correctly.
When I read it, I read it as "aa-oj-fe".

Beautiful!!!! Even though Irish names often lead to a lot of hassle with pronunciation and spelling, I'd still go for it. Beautiful name.

I only clicked on this topic because I was really curious about the pronunciation. But I can't think of any reason why you'd pronounce "aoi" as "ie" in this country. And then pronounce the "e" like an "a".

If you find the name so beautiful, why don't you create a nice spelling yourself? Something more logical and still beautiful.

I assume it's for a girl? But why would you burden your daughter with such a difficult-to-spell name, that she'd always have to spell out, when the pronunciation is so simple?

By the way, I do think the pronunciation is really beautiful!

    Is Iva an option?
  5. Jootje #6

    I agree with Gina.

    Exactly what Gwen says.
And I agree with the other ladies.. why not just Iva?

Do you think the pronunciation doesn't sound too much like Eva?

Or do you have any special alternatives?
  8. Lot #9

I read it wrong too Yva or Ieva or Iva I would write then.
    Maybe Ivy? Or Jéva
I'm also thinking of Lily, Ava, Kyra, Eilis, Maeve, Issa

    You write Jan
    You pronounce it as Piet..

So what Gwen says.. I wouldn't be able to extract any 'i' from it..

    Special alternative;
    Ziva/ zyvaa
    Yvaa
    Yvá

I would pronounce it as aa-oi-fee, as is customary in Dutch. I don't think anyone will understand that it should be ievaa.
So for the Netherlands, I find it impractical.

Ugh.. I can't quite follow this either and I do like unique names.. but I thought at first it was a typo.. Not trying to be negative, of course.
