Went for a test drive after all?

Hi lovely ladies,

Before I run off to Kruidvat (or not), I’d love to hear your advice or if anyone has had something similar? I use contraception (condom) and got my period almost 3 weeks ago. It was a bit lighter than usual and without cramps, but otherwise nothing weird.

Almost a week and a half later, I started having constant urges to pee. Like every 30 minutes or an hour. And I really do need to pee. I also had constipation and cramping in my lower abdomen (a bit of a labor-like feeling but I thought it was due to the constant pressure from my bladder). The doctor advised me to come in for a urine test, which I did. The test was negative. The next day I was supposed to call back because the doctor would look at it again and... again negative. Today, the nurse called me back regarding the form I had filled out where I had answered 'seems very unlikely' to the question if I'm pregnant, and asked if I had actually done a pregnancy test? Well no... and I thought they could tell from that urine test, but it turned out it was just about a bladder infection or something with kidney stones. Which was negative in my case. She found that my symptoms (frequent urination, constipation, cramps in my lower abdomen) looked a lot like early pregnancy.

But... how? And a condom and a period.. Seems pretty impossible to me. It's absolutely desired, mind you, but I just can't wrap my head around it. I feel like a fool for even considering doing a test.

I think you should always take a test when you're unsure. Symptoms can be so varied and uncertain that you shouldn't assume you're either pregnant or not. Your body can play tricks on you sometimes.. So just to be safe, I'll go get a test!

Orchidea, yes, you're right, but even though it wasn't quite on the agenda (yet) (but almost), I'm afraid I'll suddenly start hoping when I do one of those tests and be super disappointed if it's negative. I'd rather think it's nothing because it seems impossible to me. Because it does sound impossible, right?

Well, nothing is impossible, even if you're using contraception, it can still happen sometimes. I don't want to scare you, but that's just the reality. Also, when you go to the GP for a urine test for a bladder infection, they only test for that and not for (possible) pregnancy. You could ask the GP to test your urine again, but this time for pregnancy, though I think a simple test from Kruidvat would be much easier. And you get immediate results, so you don't have to sit there nervously for ages.
I wish you lots of success, let me know what the result is if you decide to take the test!

Thank you so much for your detailed response, orchidea! I'm heading to Kruidvat in about an hour and will definitely just do a test. I'll keep you posted! X

    You're welcome, girl.
Tip: The ones from the Kruidvat brand themselves are really good and also affordable. I'd suggest getting a box of two packs. If you still have symptoms after your test is negative, you can take another test in a few days. Just to be sure!

Dehya, hi girl! I think you're right, you probably aren't pregnant, but only a test can give you some certainty. If your period was 3 weeks ago, you might not test positive yet anyway. I think you might secretly hope it is. Myself and many others know that the female body can play tricks on you. In my case, I was pregnant the only time I really had no symptoms at all Let me know how the test went?

Orchidea, yes, Kruidvat 2v5 indeed! I just think that if it's negative, it stays negative. My LMP was 3 weeks ago, but if I were pregnant, it would mean I had a pregnancy bleed, which means I should count from that previous period. That would mean I'd be around 6 or 7 weeks now. It should basically be a clear positive test..

Floydi, no, I never secretly hoped for it not to be. If the assistant hadn't called, I wouldn't have thought about it at all. Purely because it seems impossible to me. But if I'm going to take a test, it's indeed like 'it would be really nice', but you know the disappointment would be even bigger.. But okay.. we're going to do it. I'm heading out now for that test. Exciting!

Omg!! I am so pregnant! A really thick, dark line. I can't believe it. I used both tests. Should I go get a pregnancy test? I don't understand any of this. I'm happy, but I need to process the shock...

Now I'm worried about that bleeding from 3 weeks ago. So it wasn't a period after all. But I did bleed for 5 days (I haven't had sex since, my husband is on a business trip). It was quite a shock since I thought I was on my period. Implantation bleeding doesn't last that long, does it? And it's the weekend too, pff..

Hi girl, congratulations! Do you have photos of the test? I'm curious I can imagine that the bleeding seems like a bad thing, but it can happen. If you have a clear test (a distinct line), then you still have a lot of hormones in your body, so it looks like everything is going well. I would contact a midwife in advance. The bleeding could lead to an early ultrasound at 8 weeks. That way, you'd have it done already. Calculated from the previous period, so you can get certainty quickly. Is your husband still away? Have you told him yet?

Hi Dehya, congratulations! Nothing is as unpredictable as a woman's body . You have two beautiful stripes, so that's a good sign, although I understand you're worried about the bleeding. Still, you'll read that it's quite common in the beginning and that it doesn't always mean bad news. If you're really around six or seven weeks, they might already see something quickly at the midwife's. Good luck and let us know how it goes?

Hey girl, congratulations! It's really smart that you went ahead and did those tests after all. Make an appointment with a midwife soon; bleeding like that often means nothing. I had bleeding early in my pregnancy too and mistook it for a period. Now go enjoy yourself!
