Hi everyone,
My friend's last name is Leferink. I always thought the name Liv was really beautiful. Now I'm wondering if it goes well with the last name? What do you all think?

    I think it's totally doable.

    Goes great! Fun!

    Exactly powerful 2x the L.
  4. Agnes Guest #5

    I don't really think it flows so well.

    I think it's totally fine!
    And in everyday life, you're not constantly addressed by your first and last name anyway!

    What does it matter what we think? It's about what you think, right?

    How often are you referred to by both your first and last name?

    I'd focus more on not getting a W.C. Eend name.

    I actually think Liv Leferink works pretty well, but I also understand your hesitation.
    In case you're still unsure, I have a few more ideas here.
    I think these names suit the surname Leferink nicely.

    Loa
    Célis
    Laudet (beautiful name, means 'glory' or 'praise'!)
    Lindy
    Tova
    Lia
    Esy
    Lovia
    Lavelle
    Ciska
    Esmee
    Lova (Scandinavian and strong!)
    Cécile

    How did you guys decide on the last name?

    I’d choose a last name based on:
    - how the name sounds;
    - the culture the name comes from (do you want it to be Dutch or international, for example);
    - whether the name offers good career prospects for the child;
    - how it balances the connection with both families.

    I wouldn’t let the gender of the parent (who’s the dad and who’s the mom) influence the decision. Back in the day, it was standard to take the man’s last name because women were treated as inferior and had no say. That’s an unpleasant tradition we’ve thankfully left behind. Nowadays, every couple can just decide for themselves.

    So is there a special reason why your last name fits better? Because otherwise, choosing Liv seems like a good reason to go with your last name if it fits better.

    Emara, you're absolutely right. In our area, everyone also chooses the last name based on sound, family ties, rarity, career prospects, whether it fits the first name, etc.

    However... unfortunately, there are still many places in the Netherlands where passing on the father's name is referred to as a "tradition." This "tradition" stems from centuries of oppression of women, but in such circles, it's still seen as completely normal for the man to make the decision. These women believe that the man's last name is more important and that women have no say in the matter.

    Thanks everyone for your replies. Emara and Sanne, I hadn't really thought about the surname aspect. It could indeed be an option to use my last name. Lovely Estee, thanks for suggesting a few names, I'll think about them.

    Does Liv suit your last name better?
    Only if there's a real reason why it should be your partner's last name (for example, if there's already a child with that last name), then I'd choose a different first name.
  12. Carola Guest #13

    I’ve indeed heard it before: that some men, according to a "tradition," claim the right to give the child their last name. Brrrr... I get goosebumps from such statements. We also simply chose the last name based on practical and emotional arguments, like spelling and family ties.

    Which last name fits Liv best?

    Have you made up your minds yet?
    What did you decide on: the other last name, or a new first name?
  14. Lova Guest #15

    I'm actually quite curious too. :-)

    My child's first name fits best with my last name. And the decision was made quickly because my last name is more international. So it was going to be my last name anyway.
  15. Anoniem Guest #16

    Sure thing!
  16. Rose Guest #17

    I don't think it's beautiful. Why not your last name? If Liv is the name for you both.
