How do you warm up the food?

We make the milk with 1/3 boiled water and 2/3 cold water when we're in a hurry, and if we have time, we boil all the water and let it cool down.

We usually make the baby food ourselves for our son in the steam blender. If we're heating a jar, we do it in a pan with hot water, and if we're really in a hurry, we use the microwave.

When we're out and about, we look for a microwave or figure something else out

Quick question about the microwave, isn't that harmful?

For on-the-go, there's something like a fever warmer for in the car, but this one is quite big.

At first I'd just boil it and let it cool down or add some cold water... better for the colic... But later on I'd just use the microwave...
There are 2 kids here who are hardly ever sick so it's not too bad I think ;-)
I mean if you're at the zoo or something I'd also always use the microwave they have there specifically for that...
Yeah you also have bottle warmers for in the car.. otherwise just bring a thermos with boiled water and a bottle with cold water? to make the bottle on the go..

As far as I know, a microwave isn't bad. I often use it for baby bottles too. At first, I used to boil the milk and then let it cool down.

The microwave isn't so great because some nutrients seem to get destroyed in it.

    hey marloes,

i always took a thermos with boiled water and a bottle of cold mineral water for on the go... really handy and always within reach! you can also heat the water in the microwave and then add the baby food to it! this way the nutrients are also well preserved.
congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck!

Oh I had already replied...but of course I did it right, as Lynn says: heat the water first and then add the food...not putting the food in cold water and then heating it up!!!!
Seems like not really the way to do it either, honestly;-) so just heat the water and then add the food..

I made bottles with cooled boiled water and added the powder to it. You should never warm up breast milk in the microwave (it ruins everything), and it's also better to heat solid food au bain-marie because the radiation from the microwave doesn't keep all the molecules in the food intact, which means a lot of vitamins are lost.

I used to use the bottle warmer first, but that took too long!! So I put it in the microwave. This was 6 years ago though.
My friend now just uses warm water from the tap! She says that's okay, so you can either go for the microwave or warm tap water!

I wouldn't really recommend warm water! Do you know how many bacteria and such are in there? Just heat up cold water in the microwave... it's much healthier for your baby;-)
  10. AnnaRebecca #11

@cin, it's still the same water from the same tap with the same bacteria!! They only die if you boil the water... and you don't boil it in the microwave, do you??
  11. Cin #12

It’s just different... you heat COLD water in the microwave, but warm water from the tap is really different...
  12. Cin #13

There are way more bacteria in warm water from the tap than in warm water from the tap!
  13. Cin #14

Sorry hihi then in the cold, obviously
  14. Lexie #15

Agree with Cin, warm water from the tap is really a source of bacteria! Definitely boil the water and let it cool down in the first weeks/months.

I'm absolutely not a fan of microwaves. The radiation isn't good for the baby. We always used a bottle warmer or au bain marie.

Cold water flows, but warm water from the tap often comes from a boiler. And that water sits in there for a while, so bacteria can indeed do their thing, that's the difference. So indeed heat it up in the microwave. For on the go, I always take a bottle of cold and a thermos of warm and mix them, ideal.

Hi! I'm still early in my pregnancy, but I really want to breastfeed. I'll need to pump at work later on. How do you warm up pumped breast milk if you can't use the microwave?
  18. Edith #19

You can use the microwave, but make sure there are no super hot spots. Stir/shake well and let it sit for a bit, and that solves it. At first, test out which power setting and how long to heat it best (this also varies by microwave).
By the way, it's best not to warm expressed breast milk in the microwave at all (preferably use a water bath), because the antibodies get destroyed in the (too) hot spots.
  19. Edith #20

You can do it au bain marie (in a bowl of warm water), or if you're in a hurry, add a small splash of boiling water and shake it well right away. The latter isn't ideal because some damage to the antibodies in the milk will always occur, but if your baby is screaming with hunger, the end justifies the means
