Pregnant after an early birth

Hi everyone,

Unfortunately, I had a very premature delivery last December, at 18 weeks. My waters broke and I had to be induced to give birth. Sadly, he didn't survive.

My gynecologist said I could try to get pregnant right away, but my midwife said it's better to wait 6 weeks and wait for my first period.
Now I'm reading online that it's recommended to wait at least half a year before trying to get pregnant again, sometimes even a year?

We have a very strong desire for a child and really want another baby soon. Of course, it's not meant to replace the child we lost; he has a place in our hearts forever!!!!

Are there any women who have experienced something similar and how long did you wait to get pregnant again, or what was the advice from your gynecologist?

Nien x

Never had a similar situation. But I know a mom who had over 12 miscarriages. Ended up with a healthy baby after waiting out the next period. Then she got pregnant again. My advice: follow the advice to wait a round. Then you'll know if your body can handle it again.

    Good luck!

I had a miscarriage at 9 weeks and then I got pregnant again right away without waiting. I went to the gynecologist to see if my uterus was clean, and she said there was an egg about to burst, so she said if you try, you can get pregnant right away and you're very fertile after a birth or miscarriage. I'll do what feels right for you, girl
    Good luck!

Hi Nien, first of all, I want to offer my condolences on this terrible loss and wish you both lots of strength!

Unfortunately, I went through the same thing last December. We lost our little boy at 22 weeks. I had contractions that I didn't recognize and was told at the hospital that I was already in labor. Our little boy lived for a little while after the birth, and then we sadly had to say goodbye. Unfortunately, no cause was found for why this happened. We saw the gynecologist, and she answered the question you're asking now. We were advised to wait 2 to 3 months before trying to get pregnant again to allow the uterus to heal and so that the placenta can develop properly again when you become pregnant.

We've known for a week now that we're pregnant again; there were 7 weeks between the birth and now. Tomorrow I'll be 6 weeks. In a week and a half, we have our first appointment with the gynecologist.

What will also happen with us is that I'll get progesterone injections from 16 weeks onward to prevent this from happening to us again. I don't know if your gynecologist has given further advice for when you get pregnant again, but I thought I'd share it with you.

And I completely understand your wish! We felt exactly the same! We also don't think it replaces your child! Our boy is always in our hearts and in our thoughts. I hope for you that you'll get pregnant again soon and that everything goes well! Xxx

I’d follow your midwife’s advice, even if it’s just so you know at least when your last period was. Waiting half a year or a year is more common in cases where the pregnancy was nearly or fully term, because those last months really take a toll on your body.
I hope you get pregnant again soon and are blessed with a healthy baby.
Wishing you strength as you carry the loss of your little angel in your heart instead of in your arms.
