Echo too early?

Good afternoon,

I had such a rotten day yesterday and I’d really like to know if there are other women who have gone through this.

My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for a few months now.
Since my cycle isn’t really regular, it’s hard to estimate how things are going.
So I stick to an average.
Tested on Jan 3rd: Negative. But 5 days later the test was positive.
Because I have experience with miscarriages, I could see the midwife pretty quickly.
They estimated I’d be around 6 weeks based on my last period (Dec 7th).
That appointment was last week. On the external scan, there wasn’t much to see, and on the internal scan, just a tiny dot. She estimated me at around 3, max 4 weeks, and I had to be prepared for it to go either way: either it was something or nothing.
I got a test to take home and an appointment with the sonographer was made for the following week.
The test was incredibly positive, so I was happy again.
The appointment with the sonographer was yesterday.
I had an external scan, and there was immediately ‘something’ visible. It wasn’t big: according to her measurements, 1.5 by 1 cm. But I was already happy because in my eyes it had grown!
An internal scan wasn’t done.
Still, she told me she had bad news and that it hadn’t grown; it had stopped at 4/4.5 weeks. She wanted to refer me immediately to a gynecologist for a D&C...
No matter what I said, she stuck to her point that it was wrong, and I got information to take to the gyno.
My other option was to wait until my body expelled it naturally.
I really don’t know what to do right now. I feel very pregnant, haven’t had any bleeding or anything... In my opinion, I’m less pregnant than they assumed...
Any other women with this kind of experience?
I’m quite shaken up and it makes me very insecure.
Greetings,
L

Hey, I didn't experience it myself, but I'd definitely get another ultrasound done. Ask someone else. I wish you lots of strength. It's possible they made a mistake.

What such uncertainty and sadness that she states so firmly that it's not okay.
If I were in your shoes, I would go for an ultrasound again next week, and then again the week after that. I definitely wouldn't have a D&C done at this moment if you're so unsure whether it's really true.
A beating heart is only visible at 6 weeks, so I would wait for that before taking any steps.
    Wishing you lots of strength!

Definitely, I’d also go for it just to be safe. You keep hearing stories about how the baby’s heart starts beating later after all! You wouldn’t want to have missed it, would you? I really hope it’s the same for you.

My first ultrasound didn’t show a heartbeat either, but everything else looked good, so we had to wait two weeks. You’re right, you don’t really enjoy those two weeks; you keep your guard up. I think it’s very normal to protect yourself emotionally. Strength for the coming weeks, and hopefully a beautiful result!

PS, with me everything turned out fine, but the midwife was also pretty positive right away. But I also think your midwife should listen to you more and not keep pushing so hard on the curettage if you're not ready for that yet!

I'd follow your gut feeling. If you have an irregular cycle, it's also possible that you're less far along in your pregnancy. Luckily, I've never had a situation where there was no heartbeat. I had an ultrasound at 7 weeks and the little heart was already beating. But I did find out that I was less far along than they thought. I already knew I was less far along because I have irregular cycles.

And the sonographer thought that, based on my last period, I should be 9 weeks along, so I said that I was pretty sure I was around that many weeks. And this turned out to be correct too.

It was supposed to be 7 weeks.

    Thanks for all the replies.
Tomorrow I'll get a call from the midwife about what I want (gynecologist or wait and see), and then I'll tell her what I'm thinking. If she sticks to her position, I'll go for a second opinion with another midwife.
    Greetings

Good so. Don't give up just like that.

Good that you're standing up for yourself! Let us know what comes out of the conversation tomorrow?

Today she called, and she was a bit overwhelmed by my reaction. But I’m getting what I wanted: an ultrasound on February 16th! It’ll be exciting weeks, but I’m so happy!

    Best,
    L.

Good job. Wishing you lots of success. She'll probably be startled when she hears the heartbeat for the first time.

That's great that you've made clear what you want. Hope you have a really nice ultrasound on the 19th!

Good luck on the 16th, I'm rooting for you!

I was just reading along, but I thought there would be some news two days after the ultrasound. Do you suspect that there was no life?
