Painting

Hi, I have an urgent question. I just spent 4 hours painting stairs with water-based acrylic paint. I opened the attic window and two room windows. It was quite windy. Now I feel really awful. Could this be really bad because I just read, stupidly in hindsight instead of beforehand, that your child could get leukemia?!?! I still have to paint but I stopped for now. Does anyone have anything to say? I feel completely powerless.

    I'm 28 weeks pregnant.

Hi hi, I think that much stress is even worse, just let it go quickly because you can't undo it anyway. You painted with water-based paint in a well-ventilated area (turpentine is much worse), so I think the chance that your baby will be affected by it is minminminimally small. If you don't feel good about it anymore: don't do it anymore.

    Have a nice pregnancy!

Maybe ask the midwife some weird questions?

Don't worry too much. I painted the nursery while I was pregnant too, and it was well-ventilated of course, and there was nothing wrong with the baby.
Almost everywhere they talk about the chance of this or that happening. But they don't mention how big that chance actually is. Sometimes it's about 0.001% or even less. Or it might be based on studies with only 18 participants. Those aren't representative. Always look at what something is based on, then you can make a much better decision about whether you really need to worry. I'm not saying everything is nonsense, but some things are blown out of proportion. As mentioned above, water-based paint in a well-ventilated room can't do any harm.

Thanks for your replies! I just need to paint the steps... Could I possibly do that tomorrow? Since I'm already working on it anyway.

We've started renovating this week, and I'm painting too if it comes to that.. I think with acrylic paint though, turpentine is worse. If you ventilate well, I'd dare to do it, but if you don't feel comfortable with it, don't do it. Trust your gut and your head

I think this dates back to the time when paints contained a lot of harmful substances. (Lead, I believe?) Professionals don't even use those paints anymore.

Inhaling paint fumes isn't very healthy, but that mainly applies to turpentine-based paints.

Standing at a traffic light at a busy intersection isn't healthy either. Once you're part of traffic, you're continuously breathing in harmful substances.

It's indeed not healthy to spend hours painting in a closed space when you're pregnant. So you did well to open the windows properly. Listen to your body and don't paint all day long; 2 hours is more than enough, and take regular breaks so you can step outside. I also painted when I was pregnant and have a very healthy baby
