How can implantation be so painful?

I know it says everywhere that implantation takes place on average 9 days after fertilization. But what is the earliest possible implantation can be?

The fertilized egg continues to divide. The first division occurs quite soon after fertilization, after about 12 to 18 hours. When the fertilized egg (zygote) consists of at least 64 cells, implantation becomes possible.
The moment the blastula embeds itself in the uterine wall, we call it implantation. Implantation takes place about 9 days after ovulation. It's not possible earlier because cell division isn't sufficient yet. However, the egg can arrive in the uterus earlier. It then just hangs around there for a while until it's ready for implantation.
If I read it like this, it could only make a difference of at most a day.

It can definitely happen earlier. It's an average of 5 to 9 days after conception. I felt implantation at 7 dpo (in the evening), light bleeding at 8 dpo in the morning when I woke up. And at 10 dpo, a light positive test. I'd never had that with implantation at 9 dpo.

Okay, thank you both.. maybe the nausea this morning was actually from early implantation... I think the chance is small, but it was weird that I woke up feeling so awful... and after an hour it was completely gone. We'll wait and see....

I hope so for you! I'll be rooting for you.

Could implantation start as early as day 5?
