Skipping night feeds for baby

Hi! I have a question. Does anyone know how babies actually skip night feeds? Do they gradually push the night feed later, or do they eventually stop waking up for the night bottle altogether? My little one still gets a night feed at 5:30 AM. I'd love to know how it went for you all?

They often sleep in later and later. I was weaning him from breastfeeding, and then my little boy suddenly dropped the 10:30 PM and 5:00 AM feeds. When they're ready, they give it themselves. How old is your baby?

For night feedings, stop waking your baby up and just wait to see if they wake up on their own. If they're hungry, they'll let you know.

    He's 7 weeks old.
I have a 2-year-old daughter, but I've forgotten what it was like with her. She was quite early with sleeping through the night. Something like 2 months.
But sometimes I'm not sure about the times. I gave the last bottle at 10 PM. And it's strange that if I give the bottle later, he wakes up at 3:30 AM, an hour earlier...
I have about 6 bottles per day, roughly 150 ml each. At 8 AM, 11 AM, 3 PM, 6:30 PM, 10 PM, and 4:30 AM.

7 weeks is still pretty young. Did you request it, or are the times she mentioned really fixed?
  5. Mimi #6

Those are fixed times. A while back he woke up at 3:30, now it's 4:30.
Is it likely that it'll be 5:30 later on?
Should I shift the feeding schedule then too? Do all feedings an hour later? Or just start as usual at 8:00 and so on?

Yeah, 7 weeks is young. Mine really started sleeping through the night at 7 months; before that, he’d wake up sometimes but not consistently. There’s a good chance he’ll keep waking up a bit later. He’s too young to tell him he won’t get anything at 4:30. I think I started doing that at 7 months. But by 5:30 he does get something, preferably around 6.

I wouldn't skip night feeds myself at 7 weeks; they can really use them then. So I wouldn't put too much effort into it either. If you do, the baby might sleep longer in a week anyway, like with the last bottle of 10 oz at, say, 10 PM until 6:30 AM. Then you've shifted things for nothing. By the way, I was terrified when my son was about 6 months old and slept through the day once. I was so scared he wasn't getting enough haha. Now he gets his last bottle at 10 and wakes up at 5 AM himself.

Yeah. I actually know that he's still too young for that.
I was more curious about how others handled it. Do they shift all the bottle/feeding times, or do they just stick to fixed times in case he wakes up an hour later at night? Just wondering how others did it.

Mimi's time between the first and last feed is just getting longer. It's 12 hours now.

    Oh, okay

    Thank you for your responses.
If I switch to one feeding, should I also shift the other feeds then? Or keep them at the fixed times?
  12. anoniem22 #13

I'd leave it as is, those are pretty ideal times. Because now you're feeding every 3 to 3.5 hours, that'll shift to every 4 or 4.5 hours soon anyway. So if your last feed is at 10:30 PM, that's a nice time, right?
  13. Anonymous Guest #14

What you can do is be a bit less strict about the 5:30 feeding. Just wait for your baby to come on her own instead of setting an alarm for it. You'll see that it naturally shifts later. And every baby is different; some sleep through faster than others. It also depends on how much they take during the day.

I breastfed on demand, and apparently, she got enough during the day that around 6 weeks she slept from 11 PM to 6 AM. It gradually shifted later on its own. 11 PM was skipped, 6 AM became 7 AM, etc.

The first time she skipped the 3 AM feeding, I woke up in the morning scared something was wrong because I had missed her during the night

It'll be fine, Mimi! You're doing your best!
You're right, they should probably be one feeding for the most part. Your baby will probably drink a bit less at 8 am then? If you have a nice schedule, I'd just stick with it, I think.
  15. anoniem22 #16

Totally agree with heart! I also find schedules nice, and my maternity care nurse told me then: "Stick to neat schedules during the day, then you'll have more chance of sleeping through the night at night." So, if your baby gets a bottle for 8 hours and still sleeps at 12 o'clock (4 hours in between), then you should wake them up. And regarding your other question, if the night feed is at half past 5, then 8 hours is indeed quite close to 2.5 hours, but it's not too serious as long as you're aiming for those 3 hours, right? I'm still struggling with this myself. Whether it's half an hour or three quarters of an hour earlier, I remain unsure.

With me, it was even so extreme that until just a week ago, so well over 5.5 months, I still wrote down every feed neatly in a notebook, including how much was drunk. Hehe, also quite forgetful, but also pure uncertainty whether everything was okay.

My son had his last feed at 10 PM when he was 7 weeks old and slept through until half past 5. Every child is different, and indeed, they let you know when they're ready.

Almost 5 kilos is really good! I see in my growth chart that my little one weighed 5045 grams at 8 weeks. I really don't remember my schedule anymore; I threw away the first few notebooks where I kept track of feedings. After half a year, I already had quite a few pages filled up, hehe. But according to me, I was on 7 feedings, and it took quite a while to get down to 6, so I expect a similar schedule. No idea, Sleen, but how much did I offer?

I just went back to search in my old forums here, and by chance I had posted a message at 7 weeks hihi. I'll copy it for you, hopefully you'll find it helpful:

Usually the last bottle is at 11 PM and the next one at 5-6 AM, which I find fine. He drinks either 6x 130 or 4x 130 + 1x 150cc, so around 600/700 in 24 hours. I don't wake him up at night for a bottle.
  19. Mimi #20

I don't wake him up for his bottle at 4:30 PM. He wakes up on his own. But I do wake him at 10 PM. He always falls asleep in his crib around 9 PM. Sometimes he's still sleeping while drinking from that 10 PM bottle.
