I think he's really cool for a boy. I'd totally go for it!

I do have to get used to it, because I know an Ellis who is a girl. For me, it really is a girl's name. But then again, why not..

For me, Ellis is still a girl's name...

That’s going to cause a lot of confusion! Ellis is really a girl’s name, is it not clear that it’s not a boy’s name in England?

Just Googled it. Ellis is both a boy's name (El-iss) and a girl's name (El-eece). It comes from Elias.
Most Dutch people can't pronounce Elias properly in English. And they see Ellis, the Dutch variant of Alice, as a girl's name.
Write the name with 1 l? Elis, associates with something less.
Or just do it. The parents of the first Robin and Mees must have had the same dilemma.

I looked it up and the interesting thing is that in Belgium there are 888 boys/men named Ellis and only 185 girls/women. In the Netherlands, however, there are only 33 boys/men named Ellis and 1686 girls/women. Conclusion: Dutch people will consider it a girl's name, but in Belgium it works fine as a boy's name.

I'm currently from Belgium and I still think it sounds like a girl's name

Nice name! I'm a teacher and I come across so many names that could be for boys and girls... I like it!

I have a son myself, whom we named Ellis. He was born in 1979. Back then, when you had to register a newborn with the civil registry, they checked the name's origin. Since Ellis comes from the name Elias, it was accepted.

Our son was born in 2018 and we named him Ellis too. We did get some pink cards at the birth, but otherwise, the name works well for our boy. There are so many Robin's, Kim's, Jip's etc., all of which can be for both boys and girls. I'm curious if it ended up being Ellis after all!
